Reddit is closing the free on-ramp to its data. The platform announced on September 30, 2026 that RSS feeds stop on November 13 and what remains of public Data API access ends in March 2027. Bots, moderation tools, research integrations and social listening products will need to move to Reddit’s Developer Platform, Devvit, or hold a commercial agreement.
The six-step shutdown timeline
Reddit’s developer timetable gives teams a clear set of dates:
- October 31, 2026 – New public API access requests close.
- November 13, 2026 – RSS feeds stop; only moderator alerts get a Devvit-based relay.
- November 30, 2026 – Registration closes for the migration bounty programme.
- January 12, 2027 – Access starts closing for apps and users that have not registered or responded to Reddit.
- February 23, 2027 – Another progress update and reminder.
- March 2027 – Public access closes for all remaining apps and users.
Reddit says more than 14,000 apps and bots have registered. Its $1,000,000 Developer Platform App Migration Program pays $1,000 to eligible apps that apply by November 30 and successfully migrate, while Developer Funds can go up to $167,000 per app.
Why the free access is going away
Reddit’s public argument is security. The company describes RSS as "a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse", and the data API has become a similar unpaid route to Reddit’s corpus. But the revenue line tells the other half of the story: Reddit’s "other revenue", which includes data licensing, grew 24% year on year to $43 million in the second quarter, while advertising rose 64% to $762 million.
Giving the same material away free undercuts the commercial licensing deals Reddit has built since 2024. Closing the public API pushes social listening tools, research products and AI assistants toward paid terms at the same time Reddit sells its own listening product, Reddit Insights.
What marketers should do now
The practical risk is social listening and AI workflows that silently depend on free Reddit data. If a vendor has no written agreement, its access may start degrading from January 12, 2027 and disappear in March. Reddit’s own documents do not list which commercial vendors hold agreements, so the only way to know is to ask.
Start by auditing every tool that uses Reddit for listening, research, moderation or AI answers. Then ask each vendor directly whether it holds a written agreement or has a Devvit migration path, and test critical workflows before January 12. If you wait until March to check your stack, your Reddit signal may already be gone.
