For years, SEO and PR sat on opposite sides of the office. AI search has just made them dependencies. New citation data shows Wikipedia, podcast transcripts and Reddit are the sources feeding ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and your PR team may already hold the playbook.
Wikipedia is AI’s default explainer
Muck Rack’s analysis of more than 25 million AI-cited links names Wikipedia the single most-cited domain in ChatGPT, and it sits among Claude’s top sources. Ahrefs places it sixth among cited domains in Google AI Mode, while Profound found about one in six cited ChatGPT conversations drew from Wikipedia.
But the more actionable stat is what gets cited. Muck Rack’s Generative Pulse 2025 report found 42% of Wikipedia citations in AI answers came from pages about processes, technologies or methods, not brand or people pages. That means the earn is not just fixing your company page; it is making sure your category, process and methodology are clearly explained and well sourced, so a model can cite them when someone asks how your industry works.
Wikipedia’s rules also read like a PR brief: neutral, verifiable, supported by independent outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and peer-reviewed journals, not press releases or brand interviews. Employees are actively discouraged from editing their own page. PR teams have been operating under those rules for decades.
Podcasts and Reddit create durable citations
A podcast booking is not over when the episode airs. A transcript, show notes, YouTube captions and a backlink are all separately crawlable, and each can become a model’s retrieval point for years. Contently’s 2026 LLM Citation Analysis ranks YouTube the third most-cited domain across major AI engines, and Ahrefs sees a strong correlation between branded web plus YouTube mentions and AI visibility. The asset loop, not the audio alone, does the work.
Reddit’s scale is the headline. Ahrefs Brand Radar counts 5.8 million Reddit citations in Google AI Overviews, far ahead of ChatGPT at 1.3 million, Gemini at 477,000 and Microsoft Copilot at 202,000. SISTRIX data makes reddit.com the fourth most visible domain in U.S. Google Search. On the B2B side, Reddit reaches 59% of U.S. business decision-makers, more than LinkedIn, and 38% of that audience is not on LinkedIn. Three in four business decision-makers plan to use Reddit to inform future purchases, and nine in ten own the final call.
The trust shift, then the fix
The old blue-link search rewarded whoever could out-optimize a page. Generative answers reward sources the model trusts: independent, third-party and outside the brand’s domain. That is why PR channels just became AI visibility factors.
For SEO teams, the fastest next steps are internal:
- Audit Wikipedia first. Search your brand on Wikipedia itself, check the talk page and revision history. Employees are strongly discouraged from editing their own page, and company IP edits get noticed and reverted. Hand sourcing decisions to PR.
- Close the podcast loop. Confirm transcripts and show notes, request a backlink, clip two or three quotable moments for YouTube and LinkedIn, and publish the appearance on a press page AI can crawl.
- Ask PR for Reddit intelligence. Most SEO tools still do not surface Reddit thread performance. Your comms team may already monitor the subreddits that matter, which is category intelligence sitting one email away.
The convergence is finally visible in the data. Before your next content calendar meeting, ask your PR colleagues how they think about Wikipedia, podcasts and Reddit. You may find a chunk of your 2027 AI visibility strategy already on their whiteboard.
