Bacardí and AMC Revive the Crypt Keeper After 30 Years

Bacardí and AMC bring back the Crypt Keeper after 30 years to host FearFest, with five original vignettes and a fan-first approach.

The hook

The opening seconds rebuild recognition before any product shows up. John Kassir’s voice returns as the Crypt Keeper, so horror fans hear the character they remember before Bacardí arrives. The film treats the 30-year-old IP as a returning host, not a borrowed mascot. The sequence is sound, persona, then brand, which lets the bumper land as FearFest content.

The structure of the film

Bacardí and AMC produced five Crypt Keeper vignettes for FearFest’s 650-hour October slate, running across linear and social. Instead of a standard ad, the character is reimagined as a cocktail-loving DJ to fit Bacardí’s music-driven “Better With a Beat” campaign. The product appears in details like the “Spookito,” a mojito with a bloody grenadine twist.

The partnership grew from a prior 2025 FearFest tie-up. Conversations started in early 2026, before AMC had streaming rights to Tales From the Crypt. Once the licensing deal was final, the plan shifted toward original character content. Bacardí and AMC brought in horror-effects veteran and Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero to update the look and direct the content, with John Kassir returning as the original voice.

Why it spread

Nostalgia is the obvious hook, but the share trigger is the fan-first craft. AMC’s team leaned on its own horror fans, kept the original voice, and used a genre director to walk the line between ad and actual content.

“If I’m a fan and I’m watching Tales From the Crypt on Shudder, and I get fed this content, am I going to call that out as an ad, or am I going to actually take that as real content?”

That question, from Mike DiGiacomo, head of integrated marketing and Content Room at AMC Global Media, became the test for the work. Bacardí’s VP for North America, Lisa Pfenning, said the brand and the character share values around self-expression and good humor. Consumer feedback has been positive, with fans excited about the return and the series rerun.

The numbers

The source does not share view counts or engagement figures. What’s on the record: a 30-year absence, five new vignettes, 650 hours of FearFest programming, and seven seasons of Tales From the Crypt now streaming on AMC+ and Shudder for the first time.

Steal this

The playbook for a smaller brand is less about buying a famous IP and more about how you make it feel native.

  • Sell from inside the world. Don’t paste your product on a character; give the character a plausible role. Bacardí made the Crypt Keeper a cocktail-loving DJ, so the rum felt like part of his world.
  • Hire fans and original creators. The original voice and a leading horror-effects director gave the return credibility that a lookalike or new voice never could.
  • Test with contained, platform-native pieces. Five short vignettes across linear and social let the partners see audience response before betting on a larger comeback.
