India’s data decade didn’t create one internet user. It created four, and most of us switch between them within a single day. The Data Saver still glances at the usage widget. The Midnight Binger queues the next episode only after the house goes quiet. The Hotspot Hero carries the room when a final, a match or a wedding invite needs one reliable connection. The Reel Royalty turns that same connection into a trend before the moment cools.
These are not customer segments. They are modes. That distinction is the useful part for digital marketers.
The four modes you keep meeting
Each mode has its own trigger, timing and marketing cue.
- Data Saver – toggles low-data mode, compresses videos, checks gigs even when unlimited. The habit outlived the scarcity.
- Midnight Binger – saves long-form content for late hours, when attention is personal and notifications feel like permission.
- Hotspot Hero – turns one phone into the neighbourhood screen, the hostel router or the train-office.
- Reel Royalty – remixes audio, jumps on formats early and treats every moment as a possible cut.
The same person can ration data at noon and spend the night editing 4K reels. A marketer who targets only one archetype misses the switching behaviour.
What 2016 actually reset
In 2016, Jio launched with the Welcome Offer: unlimited 4G data, voice, video and apps, according to Reliance Industries. The company reported 100 million subscribers within 170 days. That speed meant the question India asked began to move from ‘How much does data cost?’ to ‘What can we do with data?’
Today Jio serves 524 million+ customers, as reported by Reliance Jio Infocomm in March 2026. Its ecosystem spans connectivity, entertainment, commerce, payments, devices, cloud and AI. For marketers, that range matters less as a product list and more as a map of daily behaviour.
Use the modes, not the labels
The practical play is to see these four as dayparts or contexts, not audiences. A campaign built for the Data Saver can run before noon, when people still want certainty. A campaign built for the Reel Royalty can run late, when creation energy peaks. The Hotspot Hero moment is often live, shared and physical. The Midnight Binger moment is intimate, solo and on-demand.
When the data meter faded, the day kept going. The phone moved from the cyber cafe’s job to the bedroom, the bus, the kirana counter and the family group. That is the real creative brief: design for the moment a user slips from one mode into another.
Which one are you after 10 pm? Not a fixed type. Just the next version of the same connected person.
