Apple’s $1,999 Folding iPhone Ships Without Siri AI in the EU

Apple's iPhone Duo brings two screens, Split View multitasking and a paid AI tier hint - plus no Siri AI in the EU. What marketers need to prep now.

Apple's Folding iPhone: Two Screens, No EU Siri AI

Apple just put a folding phone on the board. iPhone Duo pairs a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch cover screen, starts at $1,999, opens for pre-order on October 16 and lands with buyers on October 23.

Nice hardware story. But the parts that will actually hit your campaigns sit in the software and the footnotes.

Two screens, one aspect ratio (thank goodness)

Android foldables have been quietly wrecking mobile layout assumptions for years without ever hitting the volume that forced anyone to care. Apple changes that math.

The saving grace: Apple says both panels share the same aspect ratio, so creative scales proportionally between them. You are not rebuilding assets, you are re-rendering them at a second size. Still work, but it is a resize job, not a redesign job.

The bigger production task is the App Store. Screenshots and app previews are your conversion surface for both paid and organic discovery, and a two-viewport device means a new asset set. Apple says developers can adapt via updated SDK APIs, with iPhone Duo support in Xcode’s Device Hub. Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already named as built for the format.

Split View breaks a measurement assumption

For the first time on iPhone, users can run two apps side by side, open two windows of the same app, and save app pairs.

Now think about viewability. Media Rating Council definitions for in-app measurement turn on rendered pixels and elapsed time. A 320×50 banner inside an app occupying half of a 7.6-inch panel is, by pixel count, fully on screen. Whether it earns the same attention as the same banner on a full-screen phone is a question no current standard asks.

Attribution itself is unchanged. Apple published nothing new on SKAdNetwork alongside the device, and Apple Ads campaigns still report through the separate AdServices API.

The European carve-out is real

Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant, ships in beta with iOS 27 on September 14 in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. It will not be available initially in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS.

Apple confirmed the exclusion back at WWDC26 on June 9, pointing at the Digital Markets Act and specifically the reading that any virtual assistant must get direct access to a user’s private data and control over installed apps. Apple says it is working on “a path forward that preserves its users’ privacy and security.” No date attached.

Practical translation for planners: an EU buyer pays the same price on the same day and gets a different device. Apple Intelligence is there (it reached the EU in March 2025), but onscreen awareness, personal context search and the new Siri app are not. Any media plan assuming assistant-mediated discovery on iOS needs an EU carve-out. Siri AI is also unavailable to under-13s, which matters if your app targets younger audiences.

The footnote that signals a paid AI tier

Buried in the footnotes: server-side Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground and cloud Shortcuts models, carry daily usage limits that vary by feature, complexity and system demand. Then the line that matters – expanded access will be available for a fee in the future.

No price, no date, no packaging. But it confirms Apple intends to meter generative capability and sell headroom, sitting alongside iCloud+, Apple One and AppleCare. Services revenue hit $30.739 billion in the June quarter, up 12 percent, driven partly by advertising and cloud.

Your prep list

  • Add a second creative render size to your App Store and in-app ad production pipeline.
  • Flag viewability assumptions with your measurement partners before Split View inventory shows up in reports.
  • Split EU from non-EU in any plan that relies on assistant surfaces or Siri-driven discovery.
  • Watch the AI labelling regime – Article 50 of the EU AI Act became applicable on August 2, 2026, and Apple’s SynthID watermarking arrives in a later software update covering “most” edited images.
  • Diarise January 26, 2027, when the Apple Ads Campaign Management API shuts down in favour of the new Platform API.

CEO John Ternus called it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” That is vendor language. What is verifiable today is a price, two dates, two screen sizes and a feature set that differs by jurisdiction.
