Google Adds Four New Ad Experience Metrics to CrUX

Google's experimental CrUX metrics now track ad count, density, CPU weight, and network weight. Here’s how marketers can use the data.

Google’s CrUX Now Measures Ad Load in the Real World

Google just made it much easier to see how ads affect real-world page experience. The Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) has added four experimental metrics covering ad count, ad density, CPU weight and network weight.

CrUX is the same field dataset that powers Core Web Vitals in PageSpeed Insights. It captures anonymous, opt-in Chrome browsing data from users on Android, ChromeOS, Linux, MacOS and Windows. Chrome on iOS is not included. Adding ad experience signals to this dataset gives publishers and advertisers a sharper look at the trade-off between monetization and usability.

The move is experimental for now, but it puts ad experience into the same measurement stream as page experience signals. That should catch the attention of SEOs, performance marketers and D2C growth teams.

What Chrome is actually measuring

Chrome defines the four new metrics around two themes: how many ads people see and how heavy those ads are.

  • Ad Count: the average number of distinct ad frames visible in the viewport while a user scrolls.
  • Ad Density: the average share of the visible viewport occupied by ad frames during a session.
  • Ad Weight: CPU: the total computational load from ad scripts and assets.
  • Ad Weight: Network: the total network traffic load from ad scripts and assets.

Think of Ad Count and Ad Density as visual load, while the two Ad Weight metrics capture resource load. A site might show few ads but still have heavy programmatic scripts that eat CPU and data. Conversely, a page might be visually ad-dense but technically light. The four metrics help you separate those problems.

Why this matters now

Google has not announced this as a ranking factor. But page experience has clearly been part of Google’s search conversation, and CrUX is the data source behind Core Web Vitals. If ad experience ever becomes a ranking consideration, having a baseline today will be a competitive advantage.

Even if rankings never change, the business case is direct. Ad scripts can slow down content, increase bounce rates, hurt conversion and drain mobile data. For publishers and e-commerce marketers, these metrics make it easier to show ad ops and revenue teams exactly where the UX cost is coming from.

Where to access the data

Chrome is making the new metrics available through the CrUX API, CrUX History API and the Ad panel in Chrome DevTools. The plan is to add them to the CrUX BigQuery dataset later, which will unlock large-scale analysis for agencies and multi-site brands.

Start with DevTools to inspect a single page, then move to the CrUX API for origin-level tracking.

Use an ad load budget

A simple operating framework is to treat ad experience like a performance budget:

  • Visible ad count: cap the number of ad frames per scroll depth, not just per page.
  • Viewport density: set a maximum share of the screen that ads can cover, especially above the fold.
  • CPU budget: flag ad tags and vendors that drive high processing time; lazy-load where possible.
  • Network budget: limit total ad payload size and remove duplicate or low-value vendors.

Run this audit quarterly or after any major ad stack change. Small reductions in ad weight often translate into faster content rendering and better user retention, even before any search impact shows up.
