A platform built on a tension
P&N Bank and independent agency Chapter have launched their first major brand platform together: Banking with heart. The insight starts with a familiar contradiction: banking has never been more convenient, but money has never felt more stressful. No app or UX flow replaces the feeling of a real human who actually cares, especially when scams are everywhere and buying a home feels further out of reach.
The strategy runs on a sharp hierarchy shift. In inflationary times, people still want to do the right thing, but they first ask what a brand does for them. So P&N’s customer-owned credentials and community story still exist, but they support the message rather than lead it. The hero had to sell the customer benefit.
A big bank boss gets a ballad
The launch film, The Ballad of a Big Bank Boss, dramatises that story through an original song. A bank boss realises what he has lost: a relationship that drifted apart, inside a system that separates people. It could have been an 80s power ballad or a big-bank-bashing sketch. Chapter chose a quieter, more human register.
“Sometimes, seismic shifts are achieved with a little heart, not a fist,” says Dean Hunt, co-founder of Chapter. The team moved from comedy to dramedy and from challenger to empathetic challenger. Russell of Rake fame plays the boss, with production by Good Oil and director David Robinson Smith. Music came from Panda Candy and Fable Audio.
What makes the platform ownable:
- Customer benefit leads: customer-owned credentials sit underneath, not on top.
- Empathy replaces bashing: the boss is a person inside a system, not a villain.
- One visual asset does the work: the heart works as a recurring brand device.
Why it matters for your brand
The lesson is less about banking and more about message hierarchy. When the cost of essentials rises faster than pay, your audience’s self-interest moves up the list. Lead with the benefit they feel today, and let your purpose support the claim.
P&N also shows the value of an enduring platform. Banking with heart is designed for the long game, with future comms expected to twist and turn while keeping the tone and visual assets consistent.
Chapter’s model kept the team lean: strategy, creative and marketing worked together from the start, and production partners were brought in early to understand the platform, not just the scripts. For a category campaign, that speed and shared ownership may be the difference between a one-off film and a platform that lasts.
