Azerion has wired microm’s proprietary PLZ-8 grid into Hawk DSP, giving German media teams a single cookie-free targeting layer spanning digital out-of-home, connected TV, audio, mobile and desktop.
What changed
The grid divides Germany into roughly 82,000 cells averaging about 500 households each. Planners can now take target groups from the best for planning study and transfer them directly into Hawk as geographic polygons, with no intermediate step.
Azerion positions the integration as a “medienübergreifender geografischer Ankerpunkt” — a cross-media geographic anchor point. Instead of separate targeting logic per channel, buyers get one spatial key.
Why geography is taking over from identifiers
Third-party cookies and device IDs fail inconsistently across formats. DOOH has no user. CTV often stops at household-level ID. Mobile ad IDs depend on permission settings. Aggregated geography works, at least approximately, in every channel.
That does not mean the integration is frictionless. The announcement does not explain how a bid request is resolved to a PLZ-8 polygon at auction time. That matters because a 500-household cell is smaller than the error radius on some IP-based location signals.
Privacy is part of the appeal. Delivery at aggregated geographic level moves targeting away from consent-heavy identifier pipelines, although it does not remove all data-protection questions for very small areas.
The German advantage
Germany has roughly 111,000 digital out-of-home screens, so the 82,000-cell grid is more than a planning abstraction: an average cell contains more than one screen. Postal geography is also becoming a standard primitive across major platforms, from Google Ad Manager’s postal-code targeting to Amazon’s DSP geo-optimization API.
What makes PLZ-8 different is provenance. It is not an official postal unit but a commercial segmentation grid built for homogeneity, which official postcodes lack. The trade-off is dependency on a single licensed owner.
This extends a pattern. Hawk already added Global Data Resources for cookie-free geo-demographic targeting across 13 European markets in January 2026, and Acxiom and Lotame joined as privacy-safe partners in the same quarter. The German grid gives the platform a proprietary national layer in its largest DACH market.
What to test before scaling
- Take one b4p-defined audience, convert it to a PLZ-8 polygon and compare delivery across DOOH, CTV and mobile.
- Ask how each channel resolves a bid request to a cell before judging accuracy.
- Use the same cells for cross-channel frequency and reach reporting.
- Run a controlled pilot; reduced wastage is claimed but no verification benchmarks were published.
The real shift for German planning teams is workflow, not raw capability. Fewer handoffs between survey data and the DSP makes cross-channel reach arithmetic tractable, but delivery proof will determine whether this becomes a default activation layer.
