Google just made its search app a lot more conversational. On September 15, the company introduced Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking, and the standard 3.8 Live model now powers Search Live in the Google app.
What changed
Rajan Patel, Google’s VP of Engineering for Search, summed up the shift: “New Gemini audio models just dropped – 3.8 Live is now powering real-time conversations in Search Live.”
The upgrade gives Search Live three capabilities marketers need to know:
- More useful spoken answers with on-screen web links to go deeper
- Smoother multilingual support, including switching languages mid-conversation
- More natural, free-flowing voice interactions
How the experience works
Open the Google app, tap the new Live icon, and ask a question out loud. You hear an AI-generated audio response and can immediately follow up. If you’re watching the screen, Google also shows links so you can dive into sources.
For text versions, tap the transcript button to read the exchange and continue typing questions. Google also saves these sessions in AI Mode history, so users can pick up where they left off.
Why this matters for search and performance marketing
This is bigger than a single feature launch. Google has been layering Gemini across Search—from AI Overviews to AI Mode—and now Search Live. Every time the models improve, the answers, links, and citations Google chooses change with them.
Voice search is becoming mainstream behavior. Spoken queries tend to be longer, more conversational, and question-led. The on-screen links Google surfaces are becoming prime visibility spots, especially for brands that want to be cited in audio answers.
What to do now
Start by testing your category and brand queries in Search Live. Note which links Google displays, how the audio answer describes products or services, and whether follow-up questions pull in your content.
A useful framework: build content around question clusters. For every core topic, answer the direct question first, offer proof, and preempt the natural follow-up. This gives Google’s live model a clear path to cite you and keeps users engaged.
For D2C and e-commerce teams, test spoken queries like “what’s the best running shoe for wet weather” in your niche. Watch whether the audio answer names specific players or sends listeners to comparison pages—that gap is your opportunity.
Also review AI Mode history and transcripts. They reveal how Google is interpreting conversational intent, which can sharpen your SEO briefs and paid landing pages.
The surface is changing, but the underlying rule holds: clarity, relevance, and authority still win. Marketers who optimize for answers and follow-ups will be harder to ignore.
