AI search has not written SEO’s obituary. In a recent interview, Google’s John Mueller said AI systems “build on SEO” and that technical SEO in particular is “going to remain very relevant.” The message for digital marketers: the foundational work still pays, and the shiny shortcuts still expire.
Listacles: a tactic with a sell-by date
Mueller pointed to listacles—those “top companies” lists brands use to nudge AI chatbots—as this cycle’s fresh example. Some are genuinely useful. Many become slop. His warning is blunt: if a whole strategy rests on listacles, “at some point that’s going to switch off and you’re left with nothing really.”
A solid site foundation, he argued, does not have that expiration date. That is not just Google boilerplate. It is the difference between a durable asset and rented visibility.
Technical SEO gets a new flavor
Mueller was asked whether AI optimization—AEO or GEO—is dead. His answer: AI systems build on SEO, and technical SEO will remain very relevant. AI crawlers may behave differently because they crawl for training as well as freshness, but that is “another flavor of technical SEO,” not a replacement.
For our audience, that means crawlability, clean rendering, structured data and fast pages are not legacy chores. They are the infrastructure AI answers are assembled on.
Watch what your SEO vendor actually does
Mueller also called on small businesses to question vendors. Old tricks—keyword stuffing, white text, cloaking—return dressed as AI tactics. A monthly ranking report is not a strategy.
Mueller’s vendor warning lands because the AI SEO gold rush is repeating a pattern: manipulators promise rankings in AI answers, then leave clients exposed when systems catch up. Seasoned practitioners have seen the same loop with cloaking, directories and reciprocal links. The playbook changes; the risk does not.
Practical play:
- Audit crawlability and rendering before chasing AI-specific hacks.
- Treat AI search as an extension of classic SEO, not a separate discipline to buy.
- Use listacle experiments as satellites, but never as the core.
- Ask any AI SEO vendor for the exact on-site changes they are making.
The foundation-vs-gimmick test is simple: if a tactic dies the day an algorithm updates, it was a tactic. If it still compounds, it is the foundation.
