Amazon High Velocity Events: CPC, Deals and Deadlines

Amazon high velocity events change CPCs, deal floors, and inventory deadlines. Here's how to plan Prime Big Deal Days and Black Friday.

Amazon High Velocity Events Reset Ad Costs and Deadlines

Amazon’s peak sales days look like retail holidays, but under the hood they are high velocity events (HVEs). PPC Land’s explainer notes that “velocity refers to rate rather than volume”—orders, page loads and bids per second, not just total sales. When Amazon switches into HVE mode, ordinary operating rules stop applying.

What an HVE changes

There is no single public definition, and Amazon documents have named different events. An August 31, 2026 Business Deals notice set a 15% minimum discount for High Velocity Event deals, pointing to Prime Big Deal Days, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The FTC complaint filed the same day listed Prime Day, Prime Big Deal Days, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the pre-Christmas period. A January 2026 Zappos job posting included seasonal promotions such as Labor Day and the Big Spring Sale.

For sellers, an HVE is a calendar of hard commitments. In the 2026 holiday cycle, Amazon priced Best Deals, Lightning Deals and Prime Exclusive Discounts at $100 upfront plus 1.5% of promotional sales, capped at $5,000; early submission removed $50 from the fixed fee. Prime Big Deal Days submissions closed on September 8, while the Black Friday Week and Cyber Monday window closes on October 20.

Inventory deadlines run even earlier: September 2 for Amazon Warehousing and Distribution, September 9 for FBA shipments with minimal splits, and September 16 for Amazon-optimized splits. A peak fulfilment surcharge averaging $0.32 per unit applies from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027.

Deal floors and ad inflation

Discount rules tighten during HVEs. A product with a $200 Business Price can be listed at no more than $180 in a regular deal, but no more than $170 during an HVE. Deals can run from one hour to 30 days and require at least a 3.5-star rating.

Advertising behaves like a demand shock against fixed inventory. Search result pages do not grow during Prime Day, but bidders multiply. CommerceIQ measured CPC during the June 23–26, 2026 Prime Day at 37.3% above the 14-day pre-event baseline, with beauty up 97%. ROAS fell 18.8% because click prices rose faster than attributed sales.

The baseline trap and the FTC case

The same event can look very different depending on the comparison. Prime Day 2026 CPC was down 0.7% year over year, yet up 37.3% versus the preceding two weeks. Stockouts blur attribution further: CommerceIQ recorded out-of-stock losses up 185% during the event.

Amazon’s ad revenue is also calendar-sensitive. The company reported advertising services revenue of $19.8 billion for Q2 2026, up 26%, in a quarter that contained Prime Day while its 2025 comparison did not.

Separately, the FTC and 22 state attorneys general allege Amazon raised ceilings on a post-auction reserve price around HVEs because seasonal demand would mask the change. The complaint claims one grocery advertiser saw CPCs up more than 90%, and that 79.1% of Sponsored Products clicks were charged at full bid in 2024. Amazon rejects the claims and says inflation-adjusted average CPC for Sponsored Products search ads was flat from 2019 to 2024. The case is pending, so treat the allegations as unproven.

How to plan around HVEs

Use the three-phase structure recommended by agencies such as Tinuiti: a one-to-two-week lead-in, the event itself, and a lead-out for retargeting. In Amazon Marketing Cloud, the “Tentpole Phase Overlap” query helps compare those windows.

  • Confirm whether your deal qualifies as an HVE deal before setting discount depth.
  • Lock inventory before the September deadlines, not after dates are announced.
  • Set a pre-event baseline and a year-over-year baseline, then monitor both.
  • Watch category-level CPC and stockout risk, not just platform averages.
  • Plan lead-out retargeting before Prime Big Deal Days on October 6–7, 2026 and Black Friday on November 27.

The Amazon calendar now carries at least five named events. Treat each one as a compressed quarter of intent, not a normal sales day with more traffic.
