Pankaj Tripathi fronts Sony Sports’ India Ki Sabse Badi Party

Sony Sports leans on Pankaj Tripathi's everyman charm to turn India's Brazil, Panama and Uruguay friendlies into a national football celebration.

The hook

The first three seconds do not open with a stadium, a scoreline or a kick. They open with Pankaj Tripathi issuing an invitation. He is selling a party, not a fixture, and he refuses to say why the party matters. That deliberate gap is the ad’s engine: viewers stay because the key information is being kept from them.

The structure of the film

The 65-second film withholds its central reveal until late. Tripathi’s warmth carries the opening, and the payoff connects the invitation to India’s meeting with five-time world champions Brazil in Kolkata on October 3.

Sony Pictures Networks India uses the hero film as a hub, not a one-off. The campaign stretches across India’s games against Panama on September 25 and Uruguay on October 6. It also spins off into ‘India ki sabse badi party x fan edition’, with Tripathi and football fans in local languages, and ‘Tripathi Ji Ki Tuition’, short films built around football. A social-first layer features Tripathi with Indian players, including captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

Rajesh Kaul, chief revenue officer and business head, sports and international at SPNI, says the ambition is to build excitement beyond the core football audience and turn these fixtures into a shared national occasion.

Why it spread

The campaign is built to travel in formats, not just as a single ad. Sony is releasing the films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, and the fan edition goes further by showcasing local languages. The short-form tuition series gives pages and creators a second, snackable reason to share beyond the hero film.

The share trigger is the pairing of India vs Brazil in Kolkata with a mainstream actor such as Tripathi. Football fans get a marquee fixture; the general audience gets a familiar face. Tripathi’s own framing of football bringing people together gives the work an emotional centre that is easy to pass along.

The numbers

The source is thin on public metrics: no view counts, reach figures or ticket demand are given yet. What is concrete is one 65-second hero film, three international opponents, a Brazil clash in Kolkata on October 3, and four release languages.

Steal this

  • Withhold the payoff. Let a trusted face hold attention before revealing the event, so curiosity becomes the retention tool.
  • Build a format ladder. Follow the hero film with fan editions, short-form explainers and player-led social clips so one idea keeps multiplying.
  • Borrow mainstream appeal. If the category feels niche, use a face who already means warmth and accessibility to a wider audience.
