What nosnippet Actually Does in AI Search Right Now

Google's nosnippet rule can suppress your normal snippet while blocking AI Overviews and AI Mode. Here's what to know before you use it.

The snippet switch that can cost you traffic

Nosnippet sounds like a small technical toggle. In practice, it is one of the few levers publishers can pull over how their pages appear in generative search—and pulling it can quietly erase the very snippet that earns the click.

What the rule does

Nosnippet is an instruction added to a robots meta tag or served through an X-Robots-Tag header. It keeps a page indexed and able to rank, but tells a search engine to list it without the descriptive text that normally sits under a title. Google’s documentation now applies the same signal to AI Overviews and AI Mode, where it stops content being used as a direct input.

The rule has limits that catch teams out. Google only reads the tag on crawlable pages, so a URL blocked in robots.txt can still appear as a bare link while its instruction goes unseen. Google’s December 2025 JavaScript documentation update also made clear that directives belong in the initial HTML, not in markup added by script. After a change, recrawling can take days to months.

Why the snippet is the pitch

For ad-funded publishers, the snippet is the persuasive text that earns the visit. Removing it has a measurable cost.

  • A Google study from before its AI products found that cutting preview detail reduced publisher traffic by 45%, according to Press Gazette.
  • Lawyers at Hausfeld put the loss higher in the French case: a result without a preview had half the chance of a click.
  • Yet HTTP Archive’s 2025 Web Almanac found nosnippet on only 0.1% of desktop and mobile sites—far behind max-snippet at 2.2% on desktop.

That imbalance explains the antitrust friction. Publishers complained to the European Commission in June 2025 that they could not opt out of AI Overviews without losing normal search visibility. Penske Media’s September 2025 complaint called the arrangement coercion.

The control that is finally splitting

Google began testing a domain-level Search Console opt-out on June 3, 2026, the same day the UK Competition and Markets Authority imposed its Publisher Conduct Requirement. That switch reached every site worldwide by August 31, 2026, and takes effect in one to two days. It keeps ordinary snippets in place while removing the property from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover.

Page-level controls are not due until March 3, 2027. Until then, nosnippet and data-nosnippet remain the only page-level instruments Google documents for AI features—and both still cost the regular snippet.

What to do now

Treat nosnippet as a surgical tool, not a default. Use the Search Console domain control when you need a clean split between classic search and AI surfaces. If you do apply nosnippet, place it in the initial HTML on a crawlable URL, and remember it does not stop Google from collecting or training on content; it only governs display and direct AI input at serving time.

Operators also read the same words differently. Bing’s guidelines say nosnippet stops captions and may limit Copilot citation quality, but noarchive keeps content out of Copilot responses. Apple applies nosnippet to AI context at page level only. A single setting does not create a uniform policy across search engines.
