Only 10.15% of AI Citations Point to Brand Sites

Only 10.15% of AI Citations Point to Brand Sites

Most content dies inside 48 hours. A team spends two weeks on a report, publishes it, shares it once, then moves to the next brief. That approach rents attention one post at a time—and the rent resets every Monday. The fix is not another content sprint. It is a distribution engine that takes one asset and pushes it across the channels your buyers actually use for months.

The AI visibility gap is already here

Foundation’s 2026 B2B AI visibility study looked at 50 B2B brands, 5.1 million AI responses and 57.2 million citations. Only 10.15% of citations pointed to brand-owned domains. For unbranded queries, that share fell to roughly 2.2%.

That means AI tools are mostly answering buyer questions with third-party communities, publishers and creators. If your brand is not present in those channels, it is invisible in the answers that increasingly influence purchase decisions.

Build the engine, not the treadmill

A compounding distribution system has a few non-negotiables:

  • Research first: Find the channels, newsletters, communities and LLM citation sources your buyers actually use, instead of defaulting to LinkedIn and X out of habit.
  • Create citable assets: Original research, proprietary data and a sharp point of view earn links, screenshots and citations. If nobody would cite, quote or screenshot it, do not build it.
  • Put one name on distribution: Shared ownership kills execution. Whether it is a founder, a dedicated distribution owner or channel specialists, someone must own reach and pipeline.
  • Invest 50/50: Most teams spend 90% of content hours creating and 10% spreading. Flip that toward an even split.
  • Attach distribution before writing: A brief should name target channels, audiences and derivative assets before a word gets drafted.

Run the launch-week and 90-day spread

Stop publishing into silence. A practical sequence looks like this: day one, publish on site and send the newsletter with the sharpest insight first; post the data angle on LinkedIn. Day two, run an X thread. Day three, contribute natively in relevant subreddits. Day four, hand pre-written snippets to sales, founders and employees—LinkedIn data shows executives and employees are already online, and people who share regularly can see up to 6x more profile views. Day five, cut a 60-second video for LinkedIn, Shorts and Reels.

For weeks two through four, add new angles, pitch podcasts and newsletters, answer existing forum questions, republish with canonical tags and put $200 to $500 behind the organic post that won. From days 30 to 90, resurface winning angles, turn the asset into a webinar or lead magnet, and update it for AI citation with clear claims, quotable stats and schema.

What that looks like when it works

Ramp turned boring transaction data into the Ramp AI Index, a proprietary asset now on the Bloomberg Terminal. It has been covered by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Economist, CNBC and Reuters. That is the payoff of a heavyweight asset inside a distribution engine.

Review the scoreboard every 30 days: traffic by channel, saves, backlinks, citations and sourced pipeline. Double down on the two channels pulling weight, cut the one that is not, and update what already works instead of defaulting to new content.
