A banana now doubles as a gym pass for two at 900+ gyms

Australian Bananas and Thinkerbell bring back Banana Gym Pass for one day: bring a banana and a mate for free entry at over 900 gyms on National Banana Day.

A Banana Gets You and a Mate Into 900+ Aussie Gyms

On National Banana Day, Australian Bananas is turning a humble fruit into a two-person gym membership. For the third year running, Banana Gym Pass is back, giving Aussies free entry to more than 900 gyms if they show up with a banana and a mate.

From fruit bowl to gym fob

The mechanics are deliberately simple. For one day only, October 7, a banana acts as your entry pass. Show up at any participating gym with your fruit and a friend, and both of you train for free. The campaign line, ‘bring a banana, bring a mate’, was created by Thinkerbell for Hort Innovation’s Australian Bananas.

The platform launched in 2024, grew to around a thousand gyms by 2025, and has since extended into pools with Swim Pass. This year’s version shifts the focus from individual workouts to shared sweat sessions.

Why the mate mechanic works

The creative idea rests on a simple behavioural insight: people stick with exercise longer when someone else is counting on them. Belinda Van Schaik, Head of Marketing at Hort Innovation, said it’s easier to stay active when you have a friend by your side.

Thinkerbell Head Tinker Zac Goldberg said the platform doubled its potential by moving from individual to shared motivation. That’s the measurable lift of a social mechanic: one banana now triggers two visits, not one.

The integrated push

Australian Bananas partnered with Nova FM to give the campaign a relatable face. Breakfast hosts Ricki-Lee Coulter and Tim Blackwell carried the mateship angle, with content following Tim’s first-ever gym trip after Ricki challenged him to rack up as many visits as possible.

A squad of influencers then mirrored that format, each bringing a mate and a banana to a local gym. The work runs across OOH, online video, radio, paid and owned social, and influencer content.

What marketers can steal

Banana Gym Pass is a masterclass in product-as-pass thinking. Australian Bananas turns a low-cost, everyday item into a ticket to an experience people already want. That makes the offer memorable without complex redemption mechanics.

There are three ingredients worth copying:

  • Product as entry pass: make the purchase itself the credential, not a coupon code or app download.
  • Built-in buddy mechanic: giving access for two means every participant brings a new potential customer.
  • One-day scarcity: a limited window forces action and creates a news moment, not just a promo.

The activation also shows how a commodity brand can earn attention by connecting to a relevant cultural moment, National Banana Day, and a shared human behaviour: training with friends.

The takeaway

For D2C founders and growth teams, the lesson is in the structure, not the spectacle. Take a low-friction product, pair it with a service your audience already values, and add a deadline. The buddy pass doubles reach and makes the offer inherently shareable.

As the platform enters its third year, Banana Gym Pass has evolved from a trial into a repeatable branded event. That’s the real win: not just one day of foot traffic, but a recurring reason to talk about Australian Bananas.
