Google Adds US, Canada to 42-Country Financial Ad Check

Google will require US and Canadian financial advertisers to prove licences in early 2027. Here's what to prepare before the rollout.

Google Adds US and Canada to 42-Country Financial Ad Check

Google is adding a licence gate for financial advertisers in North America. In early 2027, the company plans to require proof of authorization before certain ads from banks, card issuers and other financial brands can run in the United States and Canada.

What Google announced

The update came in an Ads & Commerce Blog post on October 20, 2026 from Keerat Sharma, vice president and general manager of Ads Privacy and Safety. Google says it will extend Financial Services Verification to the US and Canada, layering a sector-specific credentials check on top of the identity verification that already covers more than 97% of ads seen in both countries.

For US banks, Google will use the American Bankers Association’s registry to confirm authorized institutions. For Canada, Google says it is “engaging closely” with the Canadian Bankers Association, but the post names no Canadian registry or regulator.

What is still missing

The announcement leaves the operational details open. There is no start date, enforcement deadline, verification window, or stated penalty for non-compliance. Google gives checking accounts and credit cards as examples, but does not confirm whether loans, mortgages, insurance, crypto or investment products fall inside the North American program.

  • Exact start and enforcement dates
  • Full list of covered financial products
  • Required licences, documents or registration numbers
  • Consequences for unverified advertisers
  • Whether US and Canada require separate submissions

Why this matters now

The program already covers about 2 billion internet users across 42 countries. Google started it in the UK in 2021, expanded through Asia-Pacific and Europe, and reached 42 markets after the June 2026 EU/EEA wave. North America is the biggest missing piece and a known playground for fake bank ads.

The timing is pointed. A day before Google’s post, the FTC told Congress that Americans aged 60 and over reported $1.059 billion in investment scam losses in 2025, including $148 million through online ads and pop-ups. Google also says Gemini helped catch over 99% of policy-violating ads before they served in 2025.

Prepare before the rules arrive

For agencies managing paid search or display for banks, fintechs, lenders or comparison sites, the risk is not the policy itself but the missing detail. In earlier waves, verification was per advertiser and per country; a lender active in both the US and Canada may face two submissions. The June 2026 EU expansion used a 30-day verification window, after which unverified advertisers had financial services ads restricted.

Treat verification as a pre-flight check. Build a client matrix with the advertiser, the financial product, the regulator or registry that authorizes it, and an owner for collecting proof. When Google publishes country-specific guidance, you can submit quickly instead of scrambling. Google says advertisers will be notified “if and when” they need to complete the process.
