Your First 30 Days: 95% of Deals Are Won Before the First Call

Growth leaders face huge targets, flat budgets and buyers who decide before the first call. Audit channels before you scale spend.

95% of deals are won before the first call

Growth leaders walk into a pressure cooker: goals that look disconnected from resources, flat budgets, and a buying process that has already moved past the old playbook. Before you launch a single new campaign, the data suggests you should slow down and audit the channels you inherited.

The pressure arrives on day one

Gartner found that 73% of CMOs call their growth expectations high to overly ambitious, while budgets have stayed flat at about 7.8% of revenue since 2022. Spencer Stuart puts average CMO tenure at 4.1 years, one of the shortest in the core C-suite.

That pressure makes fast execution feel like the only option. AI has made producing campaigns, content and outreach faster and cheaper.

Most of the decision happens before the first call

6sense research found the eventual winner was on the day-one shortlist 95% of the time, and 94% of buying groups ranked their list before contacting a vendor. By the time a rep has a first conversation, the buying group has largely chosen its frame.

The traditional awareness-to-education funnel is losing ground. Forrester reports that 94% of buyers now use AI in their buying process. Pew Research found searchers click only 8% of the time when an AI summary appears, compared with 15% when no summary shows.

More production is not more pipeline

Deloitte found 66% of companies reported AI productivity gains, but only 20% reported revenue gains. Gartner adds that 72% of sales organizations report low reinvestment of the time AI saves.

The result is a production treadmill:

  • Buyers find answers before your first call.
  • AI accelerates output, not necessarily decision quality.
  • Channels need proof and consistency, not just reach.

Find you versus believe in you

A cleaner way to view your channels is to split them into two jobs. Some surfaces help buyers find you; others help buyers believe in you. Gartner found 67% of buyers want a rep-free experience, yet 69% want a rep to confirm what AI told them. 6sense adds that 62% need a seller to answer AI-related questions websites don’t.

Discovery channels are best supported by product marketing and content leaders who enable consistent touchpoints. Belief channels need deeper sales cooperation, customer evidence and senior thought leadership.

That shift is practical. A CEO who sent promotional LinkedIn messages got little response; switching to industry data and his own perspective changed the interactions almost immediately. In another case, an industry report built with data and lessons from one geography helped produce deeper sales conversations in a new geography at the right event moment.

Your 30-day audit, not a 30-day spend

McKinsey found that inconsistent information across teams is the top reason buyers switch vendors or suppliers. That changes what “fixing the funnel” means. Before scaling spend, map where the buying process breaks: top-of-funnel volume, website bounce, validation surfaces, event depth, and whether each channel has the right proof assets.

One engagement to win the first 10 customers in a new geography paired thought-leadership stories in email and social with BDR outreach and a central event. It outperformed a traditional approach of paid ads and separate BDR activity.

Use the first 30 days to diagnose, not to dazzle. Fix the proof gaps and consistency issues, then scale what buyers actually need.
