Google Ads will auto-apply website coupons from Oct 12

Google Ads starts pulling discount offers from advertiser sites into eligible Search and Performance Max campaigns on Oct 12. Here's the opt-out and the risks.

Google Ads will auto-apply website coupons from Oct 12

Google Ads advertisers have about a week to check one setting. From October 12, 2026, Google will automatically read eligible advertiser websites, extract discount offers and attach them as promotion assets to certain campaigns. Enrollment is switched on by default, but the opt-out is a single account-level toggle.

What Google is switching on

An email notice published by Search Engine Roundtable on October 5 describes the new behaviour. Google says it will “automatically identify and extract high-quality promotions” from advertiser sites and apply them to ads, with discounts and deals as examples. No manual setup is needed.

The scope is narrow for now: Search and Performance Max campaigns that have linked location assets and do not already carry promotion assets. Location assets attach a business address from a linked profile to ads on Search and Maps. That makes this a local-business feature more than a pure e-commerce play.

How to keep control

The opt-out sits in account-level automated assets settings. Find Automated Promotions and select Off. That setting covers the account as a whole, and the email names no campaign-level control. Manual promotion assets take precedence, so uploading them removes a campaign from the automated scope.

The two risks to watch

  • Stale or conditional offers. Google’s parser reads pages as the source of truth. Expired discounts, regional pricing or a promotional page left up after a sale can become an ad claim. Each sourced offer is eligible for less than 24 hours before it must be re-verified, but the notice does not explain how a lapsed offer is recognised.
  • Retrospective reporting. Google says assets with zero impressions won’t appear in the Assets section. Advertisers see offers that have actually served, not everything extracted and queued.

Why the timing matters

Barry Schwartz surfaced the email on October 5, seven days before the October 12 start. That is a short window for a default-on change, especially for teams managing multiple accounts. Google says the feature already existed, so the notice is late formal confirmation of a live capability.

What to do before October 12

First, open the account-level automated assets settings and decide on Automated Promotions. Second, audit landing pages that mention discounts, promo codes or sale pricing; if an offer has lapsed, remove or update it. Third, for offers that must stay exact, upload promotion assets manually, since manual assets take priority over automated sourcing.

This is not an isolated move. Google has already defaulted advertisers into AI Max upgrades, AI-generated voice-over on Performance Max video and the site visits asset in 2026. The coupon extraction follows a familiar pattern: automation preset to on, with a promise of less manual work. The difference is that a wrong discount is a legal claim, not just a wasted impression.
