Google Business Profile Now Feeds Gemini, Ads and Analytics

Google's free local listing now shapes Gemini answers, local ad formats and Analytics reporting. Here is what changed and what marketers should fix first.

Your free Google listing now feeds AI and ads

Google Business Profile was once the free listing you claimed so customers could find your shop on Maps. The 2026 version is different: it is a data layer feeding Gemini answers, local ad formats and Google Analytics reporting.

From free listing to AI and ad input

A profile controls how a business appears in Search and Maps: name, address, phone, hours, category, photos, posts and review replies. Google frequently builds the record before the owner arrives, but claiming and verifying gives editing rights over a page that influences local ranking and advertising products. PPC Land’s timeline shows outdated profiles now fail to surface in conversational queries. The categories, attributes and hours that once shaped a map pin now shape generated answers, paid local formats and call reporting. A wrong phone number is no longer cosmetic.

Where the money moved

Local pack ads have expanded fast. Places Scout data covering 1,200 mobile ranking reports, shared by consultant Joy Hawkins, shows sponsored local pack listings climbing from under 3% of tracked mobile keywords in early November 2025 to about 22% by January 2026.

Local Services Ads is being folded into Google Ads as a Performance Max campaign type from August 2026. Name, address and standard hours sync one way from the profile, so the source of truth sits in Business Profile. Google Analytics began importing seven profile metrics on June 8, 2026, putting local searches, calls and direction requests beside web data.

Ranking still follows three inputs

Local ranking turns on relevance, distance, and prominence—Google’s 2026 documentation also summarises the third as “popularity”—with no way to request or pay for a better local position. Profiles populate Maps and the local pack, the block of three listings shown above organic results for local-intent queries.

What to fix first

  • Verify every storefront, hybrid and service-area location.
  • Clean the name field; taglines, store codes and descriptors can trigger suspension.
  • Audit categories, hours and phone numbers because they sync to ads and AI.
  • Respond to suggested edits within the four-day window before Google may publish them.
  • Link profiles to Analytics to connect local interaction data with web performance.

Control and contention

Google connected Gemini to Business Profile on June 10, 2026 for single-profile owners and expanded it to multi-location accounts on August 7, still limited to personal Gmail logins and not offered in the EEA or the UK. Post view counts arrived in September 2026 without API access. On September 30, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google Maps now requires sign-in to read, sort or leave reviews.

The free listing is also a legal battleground. Yelp’s August 2024 antitrust suit advanced after a federal court barred Google from relitigating its general-search monopoly power on June 30, 2026. The European Commission’s July 23, 2026 DMA decision named places intermediation and Google Maps among nine services, with a 460 million euro fine. Google’s 2025 Trust and Safety Report counted more than 13 million fake Business Profiles removed.

The operating rule: manage this free profile like a paid campaign asset. If the data is wrong, the AI answer, the ad extension and the footfall report will be wrong too.
