When making a game gets close to free, the next scarce resource is being seen. Roblox’s Q3 2026 earnings call made that shift concrete: AI is flooding the platform with new titles, and developers are paying for traffic to stand out.
CEO David Baszucki told analysts on October 29 that more than 80% of the top 100 games ranked by hours used AI in their creation over the previous month. Two games built almost entirely with AI reached the top 20 by concurrent players. Daily asset uploads to Roblox’s cloud tripled month over month, and daily users of its MCP server grew nearly fivefold from Q2.
When supply explodes, distribution wins
Baszucki’s plainest line was about ads. “There’s also an inflection point going on in our ad system as more devs are using ads to buy traffic,” he said on the call. He did not give an advertiser count or spend figure, but the direction matters.
The sequence runs one way:
- AI lowers the cost of building a game.
- More creators publish, including many who never opened Roblox Studio.
- Supply jumps, so organic discovery gets harder.
- Paid ads become the fastest path to an audience.
Roblox’s Build tool illustrates the loop. It has been tested with more than 500,000 users in New Zealand, Singapore, Serbia and Thailand, who have published 70,000-plus games. Some already run ads and make money. A wider US release is planned for December 2026.
Recommendation as the real product
Roblox is not just selling ads; it is retraining its recommender to handle machine-made volume. CFO Naveen Chopra said 40% of the top 1,000 games by hours launched in the last 90 days. Retention hit its highest seasonally adjusted level since 2021, while monetization took short-term hits, especially among younger US users.
That is the strategic choice: rank for long-term lifetime value now, even if near-term revenue softens. Baszucki said the aim is to “take advantage of more creativity with AI rather than succumb to it.”
The same logic shows up in Roblox’s own media buying. Chopra said paid 18-and-over users are outperforming organic sign-ups on retention, engagement and monetization, so the company plans to keep scaling spend against a high ROAS bar. US daily actives 18 and over grew 18% year over year and 89% over two years.
What marketers should watch
The bigger pattern is platform economics, not just gaming. AI cuts production costs everywhere, so attention becomes the bottleneck. The platforms that own ranking, data and ad inventory capture the value.
Roblox holds more than 350 million hours of daily data and runs 400-plus proprietary models. It plans a skippable pre-roll video ad test in select cohorts and countries, which would add first-party inventory on top of creator-placed ads.
Shares fell 16.98% to $43.55 after hours after weaker Q4 bookings guidance, but the long-term signal from the call is less about one quarter and more about how AI changes the balance between creation and distribution.
