TikTok eyes $17B US ad year as it launches AI network

TikTok expands beyond the feed with a native ad network, agentic commerce and social search automation as US ad revenue heads past $17 billion.

TikTok turns viral reach into a $17B full-funnel platform

TikTok’s sales pitch grows past the feed

At Advertising Week New York, TikTok rolled out a suite of AI tools: its own ad network, agentic commerce features and automation for social search campaigns. The message is direct. TikTok wants to be more than the app where viral trends start.

Emarketer puts a number on that ambition, forecasting TikTok will generate more than $17 billion in US ad revenue in 2026. That is a long way from the platform Isobel Sita-Lumsden encountered when she joined in 2020. There were two people on the European B2B marketing team, no client data and no marketing infrastructure; TikTok for Business launched a month after she arrived.

Sita-Lumsden, now TikTok’s global head of business marketing, describes the new logic with a motto: “You can build once and run it everywhere.” The ad network is the product expression of that idea. Instead of treating TikTok as one more line item, advertisers can create native campaigns that travel beyond the app.

From brand experiment to full funnel

Early adopters such as E.l.f, Doritos and Pringles used TikTok as a brand-building experiment built on hashtag challenges. That courage paid off when the platform was a discovery engine. But the pitch has changed. Leading brands now treat TikTok as a full-funnel opportunity: a uniquely engaged, discovery-minded audience that sits inside culture, communities and creators.

The biggest challenge for marketers, she says, is still measurement—getting attribution right and showing meaningful outcomes from spend. TikTok is working with third-party partners to connect ad investment to the full marketing mix rather than a single last click.

That changes the B2B playbook too. Her advice for 2026 is sharper than the usual awareness-and-education approach:

  • Get laser-focused on what drives business value.
  • Use AI for lead qualification so teams chase high-value accounts.
  • Operate as full-funnel marketers, not just brand or performance specialists.

Why this matters for your plan

The launch signals that TikTok is competing for a larger share of performance budgets, not just cultural buzz. If the platform can run campaigns across its own ad network and automate social search, then media plans that only assign TikTok a brand line may undercount its contribution.

The practical takeaway is to build creative once, distribute it across the places your audience discovers, and measure the journey from discovery to conversion. Sita-Lumsden’s standard for customer experience is a useful pressure test: meeting expectations is the bare minimum; exceeding them is where brands win.

For D2C and agency teams, the 2026 question is not whether to run on TikTok, but whether your full-funnel measurement can see past the feed. The brands that treat this as one connected system will get more from the platform’s audience and automation.
