AI answers look authoritative until you check the source list. A brand can be cited by an AI platform and still never get mentioned in the answer your customers see. Semrush’s new Sources report puts that gap in front of marketers.
The report sits inside Prompt Tracking and shows the exact domains and URLs AI platforms cite across your target prompts. For teams used to competitive SEO, this is the same discipline applied to retrieval augmented generation: study who is winning the citations, find where you are absent, and close the gap.
Citations and brand mentions are not the same thing
A citation links to a page that contributed information. A brand mention means your name appeared in the answer itself. You can earn citations without being recommended—and you can be mentioned without your page being cited. That is why the report is designed to be read alongside mention data.
The workflow starts with a prompt list that reflects real customer questions: problems they are solving, products they are evaluating, and comparisons that include you and your competitors.
What the report surfaces
- Competitor pages earning citations where your content is absent
- Third-party pages shaping AI answers in your category
- Sources that get cited when your brand is not mentioned
- Gaps you can close through content updates or outreach
The Amerisleep example shows the size of the problem
In a Semrush walkthrough, mattress brand Amerisleep tracked 20 prompts in Google AI Mode. The platform cited 49 source pages, but Amerisleep appeared in just one of the associated answers. The same 20 prompts in ChatGPT surfaced 40 source pages with no brand mention at all.
The source mix matters too. Ecommerce and retail sites made up 76% of AI Mode’s sources but only 38% in ChatGPT. Knowledge bases accounted for 6% in AI Mode versus 33% in ChatGPT. That tells you which content formats to prioritize per platform.
Find the high-cited, low-mention pages
The domain view turns the report into a competitor benchmark. In the same project, Tampa Mattress was cited across 11 tracked prompts and Sleep Number across 10. Amerisleep’s own domain was cited for just one. A U.S. News page was cited across six prompts without a single Amerisleep mention.
Those are the targets: pages cited often while your brand is left out. Semrush’s “Get mentions” panel shows the prompts involved and suggests next steps, such as studying retail sources, optimizing product detail pages, applying product schema, and building buyer-focused content.
Treat it like link building for AI
Open each cited page and check whether it covers a relevant use case, includes competitors, and is current enough to update. If your brand would be a useful addition, make it an outreach priority—just as you would with digital PR. Then keep monitoring. A citation win today does not lock in tomorrow’s answer, and Prompt Tracking updates daily across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and Gemini.
