Uber turns a lawn bowls club into a senior clubhouse

Uber turned a Melbourne lawn bowls club into a free senior clubhouse, making app education feel like a social outing. Here's the growth tactic to steal.

Uber’s senior pitch: bowls, buddies and a ride home

Uber parked the product demo and picked up a lawn bowl. On 8–9 October, the rideshare giant turned one of Melbourne’s oldest lawn bowls clubs into the Uber Clubhouse for Seniors — a free two-night pop-up created with History Will Be Kind and produced by Curious Nation.

Meet older riders where they already are

The activation ran inside the month-long Victorian Seniors Festival. Guests got a live DJ, snacks, cold drinks and prizes including Uber discount codes and take-home gear, plus a friendly competition on the green. The twist: every senior was encouraged to bring a Bowls Buddy, so exploring the app felt like a social outing rather than a tech tutorial.

Bonnie Ko, Uber’s Senior Communications Manager ANZ, said the brand wanted to meet older Australians on their own turf: “Lawn bowls was a natural fit because it’s social, welcoming and brings generations together.”

Features on show

Uber didn’t just talk about accessibility. It set up a dedicated pickup and drop-off zone and had team members help guests book a ride home. Visitors could try:

  • Simple Mode: larger text and clearer icons.
  • Family Profiles: family members can book, manage and pay for an older person’s rides.
  • Call to ride: phone booking through 13-UBER for people who prefer a live agent.
  • MPTP subsidy: eligible Victorians can apply their Multi Purpose Taxi Program subsidy to Uber.
  • Exclusive senior discounts: savings for Victorian Seniors Card, Business Discount Card and Carer Card holders.

New app controls also got a run: pickup preferences such as flashing lights or calling a name, optional self-identification as an older adult, flexible card or Uber Cash payment, and easy-entry lower step-in vehicles slated to arrive before the end of 2026.

Why this works for growth teams

The smart part is the framing: Uber reframed adoption as hospitality, not training. A familiar venue, a buddy, a DJ and a ride home remove two big blockers for senior adoption — fear of looking foolish and fear of getting stuck.

The opportunity is real. Earlier in 2026, Uber’s partnership with Victorian Seniors Card saw more than 10,000 cardholders redeem offers, with about 3,000 cardholders using them across thousands of discounted trips each month.

For marketers, the pattern is clear: convert product education into a familiar ritual. Pick the venue your audience already trusts, add a plus-one, and put a human next to the app. The product message lands after the social proof, not before.
