ChatGPT Ads Opens Self-Serve in 7 Asian Markets

OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT Ads to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan with day-one self-serve buying.

ChatGPT Ads Open Self-Serve Across Southeast Asia

What happened

OpenAI has switched on ChatGPT Ads across seven Asian markets: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan. The rollout was confirmed in a September 23, 2026 newsroom post and a LinkedIn update from Benji Shomair, OpenAI’s vice president of monetization.

The big operational shift is that businesses incorporated in those markets can buy through Ads Manager from day one. That is a change from India, which went live on August 29 with no self-service route, and from the UK, which waited 16 days for the same access.

OpenAI now says ChatGPT Ads are available in more than 60 countries. Its Ads Manager availability page listed 63 countries on September 24, all marked as self-service eligible.

Why day-one access matters

For media buyers and D2C brands in Southeast Asia, this removes a familiar bottleneck. You no longer need a sales conversation, a partner agency or a large minimum commitment to test ChatGPT inventory. That is a sharp contrast with the US pilot, which started on February 9, 2026 at a $60 CPM and a $200,000 minimum commitment. The entry threshold later fell to $50,000, then disappeared for US self-serve buyers in May.

What remains is a daily campaign spend floor. A table from August 21 listed floors in ten billing currencies, ranging from 25 US dollars to 725 Indian rupees. Neither September 23 document says which currencies the seven new markets bill in.

Ads show only to users on Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free, though the new posts do not explicitly restate every previously excluded plan.

The practical checklist

If you are testing this from the region, focus on four things:

  • Check incorporation, not audience location. Self-serve access depends on where the buying legal entity is registered.
  • Plan for language. OpenAI added opt-in text customisation with automatic translation on September 16, but headline and description limits may behave differently in Thai or Traditional Chinese.
  • Expect thin measurement. AppsFlyer and Adjust cover only seven markets, and none of the new Asian markets is on that list.
  • Watch local privacy rules. Vietnam’s Decree 356 and Indonesia’s data protection regulation create fresh consent questions.

What to watch

The expansion confirms geography is running ahead of benchmarking. Independent data is still mostly Western. Similarweb’s June figure showed ChatGPT ad penetration at 26% of US desktop chats, and Adthena counted 7,378 distinct ChatGPT advertisers in July, 60.1% in the US. There is no comparable public dataset for any of the seven new markets.

Google already runs ads in AI Overviews in four of these markets. Shopee appears both in OpenAI’s announcement and on Google’s commerce audience list. That makes ChatGPT a second AI answer surface for many regional search teams, not the first.

The sensible play is to treat this as an early testbed. Start small, isolate one objective, and build your own conversion data before scaling spend.
