Google Search Profiles Open Up at 10,000 Followers

Google now lets U.S. publishers and creators claim Search profiles with 10,000 social followers, adds multi-brand logins and cleaner article displays.

Google Search Profiles: Now Open at 10K Followers

Google’s Search profiles just became much easier to claim. Product Manager Ibrahim Badr announced on September 16 that U.S. publishers and creators now qualify with 10,000 followers on any one of YouTube, Instagram, X, or TikTok.

That is a significant change from the original launch in June, when eligibility required 100,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, or X—or 300,000 on TikTok.

A threshold that keeps moving

This has been a fast rollout. In roughly 15 weeks, the bar has shifted from six figures to five:

  • June 4: Profiles required 100,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, or X, or 300,000 on TikTok.
  • August 12: Google said it was lowering thresholds; its help page later listed 35,000 across all four platforms.
  • September 16: The threshold drops to 10,000 on any single platform.

Search profiles remain available only in the United States for now. Google has previously said it plans to expand to more countries, but today’s update does not mention international availability.

One login, multiple brands

For media companies, the update also removes a real operational headache. Google previously required a separate Google Account for each brand profile. Now publishers can claim and manage sub-brand profiles from a single login.

Badr wrote that the new multi-account support lets teams “access and update your profiles, without having to juggle multiple accounts.” The documentation focuses on media companies and sub-brands, so it’s less clear whether a solo creator with multiple identities gets the same flexibility.

Articles get a visual refresh

Article cards on a profile now show longer headlines and optimized thumbnails. Google did not publish exact dimensions or headline length, but the intent is straightforward: make the latest work easier to read and more likely to stand out in a feed.

Because Search profiles pull articles and social posts together in one place, that presentation matters. A sharper thumbnail and a fuller headline can improve the moment someone decides whether to tap through.

What this means for your team

The key clarification: a Search profile does not directly affect Google Search rankings. The payoff sits in Google Discover, where people who follow a profile may see more of that source’s content.

So think of this as an owned distribution surface rather than a ranking hack. If you run a publisher, creator brand, or media portfolio, a practical approach is:

  • Check Google’s help page for current eligibility before ruling yourself out.
  • Claim the profile and connect the social account with the strongest follower base.
  • Use multi-account support to consolidate sub-brand management under one login if it’s available to you.
  • Keep publishing consistently; Discover visibility depends on fresh, follow-worthy content.

The threshold has changed twice in 15 weeks. If you’re close to qualifying, check back regularly—this is the kind of window that can open quickly.
