Agentic SEO: Four Layers to Automate Repeatable Work

Agentic SEO is not another prompt you throw at a chatbot. It is a defined workflow you hand to an AI agent that pulls its own data and returns the same analysis every time it runs. That consistency is the real unlock: a competitor teardown or content decay report that looks great once but drifts next month has not automated anything.

Semrush just published a hands-on guide to building this setup, running eight workflows on a live site. The core idea is structure over vibes.

Why repeatability beats a long prompt

Two things separate agentic SEO from a clever prompt. First, the system retrieves its own data from tools such as Search Console, Semrush, and Google Analytics instead of waiting for you to paste an export. Second, the method lives outside the conversation in a written skill, so the checks that matter get applied whether or not you remember to ask.

Faizan Ali, SEO & AI Search Strategist at Semrush, puts it bluntly: With one long prompt I’d be re-explaining everything every time, and the longer it gets the more Claude drifts, loses context, and starts filling gaps with hallucinated stuff.

The four layers to build

  • Project: persistent documents with business context, audiences, competitors, editorial rules, and approval requirements.
  • Skills: the repeatable method, including ordered steps, scoring rules, and output formats.
  • Model Context Protocols (MCPs): connections that pull live data from Semrush, GSC, GA, SerpAPI, Firecrawl, and your CMS.
  • Prompt: a short ask for this run only, because the other layers carry the rest.

That separation matters. If something breaks, you fix the layer rather than debugging a wall of text. And if a task changes every time, skip the overhead; but recurring SEO jobs with defined steps are exactly where this saves hours.

What to run first

Semrush’s guide ships eight skills you can load into Claude, covering content decline diagnosis, technical SEO sprint triage, competitor growth investigation, content briefs, internal linking, portfolio audits, AI citation gaps, and post-migration checks. Each can be invoked by name or slash command.

One workflow shows the power of a layered approach. The content decline diagnosis pulls period-over-period Search Console data, drops anything under a materiality floor, checks indexation before anything else, then examines rankings, demand, links, and cannibalization. In Semrush’s live test, a 230-click drop came from a planned 301 consolidation, while another page was indexed but missing from the submitted sitemap—a five-minute fix. The workflow surfaced both without a human reading every URL.

Start small, keep guardrails on

For our readers, the practical move is to pick one recurring SEO workflow and make it agentic. Set up a Claude project with context documents, connect no more than a couple of MCPs, install one skill, and add guardrails: keep production tools read-only unless you approve, show a plan before multi-step workflows, and flag missing data instead of estimating.
