Prebid: The Free Auction Layer Now at the Center of Ad Tech

Prebid has quietly become the operating system for programmatic yield. It is not an ad network or a vendor you buy from. It is an open-source toolkit that lets publishers run one auction across many demand sources before their ad server decides what to show.

The news hook: a U.S. remedies opinion unsealed on September 16, 2026 requires Google to build interfaces so Prebid can solicit real-time bids from AdX for all indirect open-web display inventory. Google also has to let DFP publishers route indirect and programmatic direct demand through Prebid on functionally equivalent terms. That moves a project volunteers built from an AppNexus script into the center of the largest ad tech antitrust case in the United States.

How the auction actually works

Prebid.js runs in a publisher’s browser. It calls every configured bidder in parallel, waits up to a recommended 1,000 milliseconds, and passes the best responses to the ad server as key-value pairs. A typical client-side setup uses five to 15 demand partners; server-side deployments often run more.

The ad server then matches those values against line items. A $1.50 Prebid bid can compete with direct campaigns and Google’s own demand at close to its real price. Medium price granularity rounds to 10-cent increments and caps at a $20 CPM.

  • Prebid Server: server-side auction using OpenRTB; default timeout is 75% of page timeout.
  • Prebid Mobile: in-app bidding for iOS and Android.
  • SharedID: Prebid’s first-party identifier; no transaction fee.

Why this matters for buyers and sellers

For publishers, Prebid is where yield is managed outside Google’s systems: which exchanges see an impression, what floor they see and which identifiers travel with it. For buyers, it shapes supply. One impression offered to eight SSPs can arrive at a DSP as several separate bid requests, which makes pre-bid filtering a discipline.

The split over transaction IDs

In August 2025, Prebid made transaction identifiers bidder-specific. The IAB Tech Lab said that materially violated OpenRTB. The Trade Desk forked the code in October 2025 and launched OpenAds to preserve shared IDs. Nine publishers including the Guardian and Hearst committed to it in January 2026. The open license permits forks; it cannot prevent fragmentation.

What to watch next

PubMatic’s CEO wrote that Google’s engineers estimate a year to 15 months to build the court-ordered integrations. A joint proposed final judgment is due October 2, 2026, and the Prebid Summit meets in New York on October 13.

Recent moves show the ecosystem broadening: Amazon Publisher Services opened a Prebid adapter in beta in January 2026, connecting Prebid auctions to Amazon demand and more than 60 third-party buyers. Prebid also took stewardship of an open-source sales agent for AI-driven direct buying.

For growth teams, the practical takeaways are simple: monitor which Prebid integrations your key publishers run, keep an eye on identity changes that affect frequency capping and measurement, and treat auction transparency as a supply-path issue.
