Cleaner Data Lifts Demand Gen Conversions 20%+: Google

Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI and Google all shifted campaign controls in October. The big signal: cleaner data drove 20%+ Demand Gen uplift.

Cleaner data lifts Demand Gen conversions 20%+

Between October 1 and 16, 2026, major ad platforms quietly reshaped campaign controls, measurement and commerce. Microsoft removed a bid lever for some new campaigns. Google closed out a spam update and pushed first-party data harder in Demand Gen. OpenAI began testing visual ads in ChatGPT, and Meta outlined another step toward checkout inside chats.

The pattern behind the product updates? Platforms are taking more decisions on themselves. That makes the quality of your inputs, and your ability to audit the results, the real competitive edge.

The October updates worth a review

  • Microsoft Advertising: Since October 1, Max CPC is no longer offered when creating certain new campaigns with non-portfolio Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value or Maximize Clicks. Existing campaigns and portfolio bid strategies can keep it.
  • Google Search: The September 2026 spam update finished rolling out on October 8, giving marketers a clean before-and-after window.
  • OpenAI: A visual ad format is in initial testing for ChatGPT Free and Go users in the US, with a limited advertiser group. OpenAI says ads “will be clearly labeled and kept separate from generated images.”
  • Meta commerce: Direct checkout is being tested in Meta Business Agent on Messenger, powered by Shopify. Meta AI checkout tests are planned for the fall with Adyen, PayPal, Shopify and Stripe, and Muse adds PayPal wallet support.
  • Google Ads AI Max for Search: A new Search terms and ad combinations report, reported on October 13, puts search terms, headlines, descriptions, landing pages and match sources side by side.
  • Google Demand Gen: Google announced Data Strength Uplift, expanded Data Manager to Display & Video 360 and Google Analytics, and is adding enhanced conversions. In its internal analysis, advertisers using Google Tag Gateway averaged more than 20% conversion uplift in Demand Gen.
  • Meta brand campaigns: Ads Super Burst is moving to general availability through a phased rollout; First Impression Ads remains an early US-only test; Reels Trending Ads options are expanding.

The 20% uplift is a data audit, not a dashboard win

Google’s 20%+ Demand Gen figure is easy to screenshot and hard to use. It comes from strengthening data setup, not from changing creative or bids. That means the first step is to fix what the pixel reports before you demand more from the algorithm.

Start with event definitions. A lead that fires on junk form submissions is not a lead. A purchase that arrives twice is still a duplicate. Refunds and test transactions need to be excluded or accounted for. If those events are wrong, the platform is optimizing against nonsense with better delivery.

When a measurement update shifts performance, separate three explanations. The system may simply see conversions that were already happening; the cleaner signal may genuinely improve bidding; or both effects can land at once. The only way to tell is to compare platform numbers with your own business records, such as orders, contribution margin, qualified pipeline or closed revenue.

What to do before you touch budgets

If Microsoft has removed Max CPC from your new campaign flow, don’t blindly rebuild the same setup. Ask why the cap was there: low-margin products, unreliable tracking, or an agency default? Fix the underlying reason, then review budgets, acquisition targets and conversion tracking together. If an existing campaign is performing, leave it.

After Google’s spam update, resist the urge to change everything at once. Segment by page type, directory and query before acting. Document which pages dropped and what you changed, so you can tell what actually worked.

For OpenAI’s visual ads and Meta’s conversational checkout, treat them as tests. Set the conversion you care about, the measurement window, the target CPA and the total budget up front. For commerce, make product information, availability, shipping and return policies consistent before you let an AI answer customers.
