The visit appears in your analytics as branded organic search. The moment that created the interest never shows up. That is the core of AI’s attribution problem, and new Similarweb research puts a number on it.
What Similarweb measured
Similarweb followed ChatGPT users across finance, travel, and beauty who received a specific brand recommendation. It excluded anyone who had already visited that brand or mentioned it in the prompt, then tracked what happened over the following seven days.
The result was striking: recommended brands were 2.5x more likely to receive a website visit within seven days.
Why most AI traffic doesn’t look like AI
Similarweb found 55.9% of AI-influenced visits arrived through search, compared with 40.4% of visits without AI influence. A shopper asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, remembers the name, and Googles it days later. Your analytics books that as branded organic search.
The AI interaction that created the interest receives no credit. The traffic is real; the original source of influence disappears between discovery and conversion.
Last-click gives the wrong read
Branded search is often treated as proof that awareness already existed. This research suggests some of that demand can be planted earlier, inside an AI answer. From the customer’s perspective the journey starts with ChatGPT. In the analytics, it starts at Google.
Similarweb also found AI-influenced visitors engaged more deeply after arriving. They viewed nearly twice as many pages and spent roughly twice as long on site.
How to measure before the click
You don’t need a perfect AI attribution model to start. Track the signals that tend to show up downstream from AI visibility:
- Branded search: compare it with your visibility in AI answers.
- Direct traffic: watch for lifts after you appear in AI recommendations.
- Engagement and conversions: AI-influenced visitors may be more valuable after they land.
These signals do not prove that every follow-up visit was directly caused by an AI recommendation. But when they move together, the case is stronger than AI referral traffic alone can make.
The channel is bigger than the referral
AI referral traffic is still worth tracking, but it is only one part of the picture. Direct visits, branded search growth, engagement, and downstream conversions all help show whether appearing in AI answers is changing customer behavior.
As Neil Patel puts it, “AI shapes the decision before the click.” For SEO and GEO teams, that means measurement has to value influence, not just the final interaction.
