OpenAI just redrew the ChatGPT ads map. The company switched on advertising in 26 more countries on October 21, taking ChatGPT Ads to 89 markets and passing a cumulative 100,000 advertisers since the US pilot launched just over eight months ago.
Where the ads are going
The expansion lands in two big groups. In Latin America, OpenAI added 14 markets, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, following earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil. A second wave covered Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, with Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan among the named additions.
There is a catch for planners: OpenAI named only 11 of the 26 new countries. The other 15 are not listed, and the post gives no per-country start dates. Ads continue to appear only on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro and Enterprise remain ad-free.
The 100,000 number needs a planner’s eye
The headline’s 100,000 figure is cumulative. It counts every advertiser that has run a campaign at any point since February, including one-off tests. OpenAI did not disclose active advertisers, spend, revenue or how tech-partner accounts are counted.
That gap matters. A cumulative total can rise even if weekly active demand is much lower, and third-party snapshots have shown active advertiser counts in the low tens of thousands. The number signals adoption and curiosity, not current performance.
Why the speed is the real story
ChatGPT ads went from nine countries on August 17 to 89 ten weeks later. India and 31 European markets went live in five days in late August, then seven Southeast Asian markets and Taiwan followed in September. This is the largest single batch outside Europe.
That pace has outpaced the paperwork. OpenAI’s announcement leaves several practical questions open:
- The full list of 26 countries; 15 are unnamed
- Billing currencies and minimum spends
- Supported ad languages and formats
- Eligibility rules for self-serve access
- Active advertiser or revenue data
What L’Oreal’s early bet tells you
Asmita Dubey, chief digital and marketing officer at L’Oreal Group, framed the company’s test as “seize what is starting.” The quote is about intent rather than outcomes, but it points to where OpenAI wants the product to go: ads that sit inside AI-assisted discovery, evaluation and eventually agentic commerce.
How to approach ChatGPT Ads
OpenAI’s own example shows the creative logic. A user training for a marathon explores race-week meal ideas, then filters by dietary preference and cooking time. A grocery delivery ad relevant to that conversation can enter the consideration window.
That is context-hint targeting: the placement matches the state of the conversation, not a typed keyword. For performance teams, that means testing conversation-level relevance instead of importing search keyword lists wholesale.
Before spending in a new market, ask OpenAI for billing currency, self-serve eligibility and language support. Pilot one market, measure against your own performance data, and treat the platform’s cumulative numbers as an adoption signal rather than proof of demand.
