8.0% of Tracked Google SERPs Looked Broken: Cross-Check First

Rank trackers and ChatGPT referrals threw false alarms this month. Here's why the data moved and how to cross-check before client reports.

8.0% of Tracked Google SERPs Looked Broken

Rank trackers, ChatGPT referral tags and AI search reports all changed behavior in October, and the common thread is simple: before you call it a traffic or ranking loss, check how the number was collected.

A ranked-page glitch, not a ranking collapse

Nozzle’s analysis of 17.8 million Google results pages found that 8.0% of pages checked between Sept. 13 and Oct. 9 were missing most of the keyword’s usual sites, which then returned on a later check. That compares with just 0.17% between Aug. 20 and Sept. 9.

The pattern peaked around Sept. 27-29, when roughly a quarter of tracked pages were affected, and has run at about 5% to 11% a day since Oct. 1. Nozzle describes these pages as “poisoned” and attributes them to Google’s response to AI scraping. Google did not provide a statement in the report.

For a customer’s own site that would normally rank, it was missing from the top 10 on 58.6% of affected pages, versus 2.7% in the baseline. That is a huge false-negative risk.

ChatGPT referrals lost their UTM tag

If ChatGPT-attributed sessions fell off a cliff in GA4, the visits may still have arrived. Graphite CEO Ethan Smith reported an approximate 45% drop in ChatGPT sessions on sites with meaningful AI Assistant Channel traffic. The likely culprit: inline links in ChatGPT answers stopped carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com after GPT-6 rolled out, so the data landed in Direct.

Adobe’s Cedric Huesler said OpenAI confirmed the bug on Oct. 14 and began deploying a fix on Oct. 15. By around 9 a.m. PT on Oct. 15, tagged ChatGPT clicks had returned to roughly 95-100% of the same hour the previous week across thousands of sites he tracks. SEO consultant Glenn Gabe had not yet seen the change, and OpenAI’s Oct. 15 release notes did not mention it.

AI search reporting is shifting too

Google is showing inline links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews more often, but in Search Console those links still inherit the single position of the overall overview. Google is also testing official-page links, expanding Preferred Sources carousels, and testing creator and publisher names on AI Mode video results.

Microsoft added a beta Topics Portfolio to Bing Webmaster Tools. It groups your AI citations into topics and flags opportunity queries where other sites appear and yours does not. Microsoft says to treat those metrics as directional.

Cross-check before you call it

  • Ranking drops: compare against pre-September baseline and Search Console impressions and clicks.
  • ChatGPT traffic: note the Oct. 8-15 window and tag visits by UTM source.
  • AI search metrics: read Bing topic numbers as ranges, not exact counts.
  • Discover reporting: impressions are the only described metric, so treat it as a directional signal.

The lesson is a framework we like: triangulate. Every reporting surface has a bias. Your job is to find the second and third signal before you change budgets or tell a client their rankings collapsed.
