Mine Your Customer Conversations for AI Search Citations

The exact phrases that earn AI search citations are hiding in your call logs, chats and tickets. Here is how to turn them into AEO content.

AI search citations hide in customer conversations

Marketers keep guessing which phrases will get their brand cited in AI Overviews and LLM responses. Search Engine Journal frames the answer as “sitting in the conversations your customers are already having with your business.” That means your first-party data is already doing part of your AI search research.

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026 at 2 p.m. ET, CTM’s Lisa Salvatore and Brian Barranger will show how to extract that language and turn it into content that AI search actually cites.

Why first-party data beats keyword guesswork

AI search engines pull answers from plain-language questions and conversational phrasing. The exact phrases customers use are the same ones AI Overviews and LLMs pull from, making your own conversation data a fast research layer for answer engine optimization (AEO).

Most teams already hold this information in call recordings, chat transcripts, support tickets and sales notes. Search Engine Journal notes much of it sits untouched. The opportunity is to turn real customer questions into FAQ content and AI-mentionable answers before buyers ask.

The strategic shift is clear: content optimized for AI search should be written from customer questions, not just search volume. AEO is less about ranking and more about becoming the source an answer engine trusts.

Turning phrases into citations and qualified leads

Lisa Salvatore, Senior Manager of Integrated Marketing at CTM, will cover pulling AEO insights and FAQ content out of real customer phrasing. The goal is not citations alone, but clicks from potential buyers.

Brian Barranger, Senior Account Executive III at CTM, will explain what a qualified conversion actually looks like in AI search. That evidence can sharpen targeting, lead scoring and what gets routed to product teams.

What first-party data can reveal

  • Exact language that earns AI search citations.
  • Which AI search clicks came from real potential buyers.
  • Signals for sales, leadership and product teams.

Beyond content, Search Engine Journal says those signals include demo gaps, integration requests and market demand. That gives marketing a stronger case when reporting to leadership and product.

A simple AEO workflow

Start with a handful of recent sales calls or support tickets. Look for repeated questions in plain customer language, cluster them, and answer each one directly on a page with a clear Q&A structure. Then connect the page to lead data instead of celebrating clicks alone.

If a page earns AI search traffic but no qualified conversions, the message may be pulling browsers rather than buyers. Use that evidence to adjust targeting and lead scoring.
