Every retail media pitch deck promises closed-loop measurement. Strip the jargon and the promise depends on one humble object: the SKU.
PPC Land has published a detailed explainer on the stock keeping unit, and the story it tells is bigger than inventory admin. A code invented so warehouse staff could count boxes is now the resolution at which ads are bid, attributed and audited — without ever gaining the standardisation that job would normally demand.
What a SKU actually is
A SKU is a self-assigned alphanumeric code for one distinct sellable item at one specification: one colour, one size, one pack format. No standards body issues it. No register validates it. Two retailers stocking the identical carton of shampoo will almost certainly label it differently.
That is deliberate. The SKU answers an operational question — how many of exactly this thing do we have, and how fast does it move — so the operator gets to decide the granularity. A grocer may run one SKU per pack size. An apparel retailer runs one per colour-and-size combination, turning a single style into dozens of codes.
Two consequences matter for marketers. SKUs are not portable: your supplier’s code means nothing to a distributor. And SKUs are not barcodes. A barcode encodes a GTIN, issued through GS1 in 8, 12, 13 or 14 digit forms. The GTIN travels; the SKU stays home.
Where it enters your ad account
The bridge is the product feed. Google Merchant Center requires an ID attribute for every item and recommends using the SKU. The field accepts 1 to 50 characters, alphanumerics plus underscores and dashes, and maps to schema.org’s Product.sku.
But the feed rules are stricter than your own naming habits, and this is where teams get burned:
- IDs must be stable. Google combines ID with target country and language to pull product data and hold performance history. Change the ID and you overwrite the product and its record.
- Never recycle IDs after a product is discontinued.
- Casing is not a differentiator. abc123 and ABC123 may be read as one product in Google Ads filtering.
- One value across countries and languages.
- Variants use item group ID. Google’s own example: item group 12345 with children 12345-R, 12345-G, 12345-Y and 12345-B for four sunglasses colourways.
Other platforms treat the SKU as an attribute rather than the key. Microsoft Advertising’s Product explorer filters catalogues by product ID, feed label, brand, GTIN, MPN, SKU, product type, condition and custom labels. On Amazon, one ASIN can carry thousands of seller SKUs, each SKU maps to exactly one ASIN, and the FNSKU ties physical units in a fulfilment centre to a seller account.
Why retail media made it a measurement object
The IAB and Media Rating Council’s Retail Media Measurement Guidelines, published in January 2024, say SKU-level reporting should be the minimum, because most investment goes to promoting specific SKUs. IAB Europe’s Commerce Media Measurement Standards, out for comment in October 2025, add that same-SKU attribution should roll up to the parent SKU — a click on a shirt credits every size and colour — and fix halo attribution as same brand, same category.
The plumbing followed. Kroger Precision Marketing joined Google’s Commerce Media Suite on 24 March 2026 with SKU-level sales attribution against Display & Video 360 buys. Walmart Connect landed in DV360 on 11 June 2026, after Walmart Data Ventures opened roughly 500 retail data elements via the Scintilla Media Data Feed on 28 April 2026. Amazon’s Profit Analytics, released 18 September 2025, calculates profitability at SKU, ASIN and parent ASIN level for up to 500,000 listings. And from 15 June 2026, the Google Ads API extended product-level cost and conversion reporting to video, Demand Gen and app campaigns — with no historical backfill.
The cracks worth knowing
Because SKUs are private, cross-retailer measurement has to be reconstructed through GTINs, clean rooms or modelling. Research published 15 June 2026 across 150,000 campaigns and $350m of spend on four networks estimated siloed attribution misses 36% to 53% of campaign impact, rising to 67% to 80% for off-site video. It is vendor-supplied research with unnamed retailers, a caveat the publisher acknowledges.
Feed mechanics add friction. From March 2026 Google requires separate product IDs where online and in-store versions differ on price, availability or condition — splitting one physical SKU into two ad records. Automatic import, marketed on a 24-hour refresh, returned nine-day-old data when tested on 13 January 2026.
Your action list
Audit ID stability before anything else: if your ERP regenerates codes on re-listing, your performance history is quietly resetting. Lock item group ID hygiene so variant reporting rolls up cleanly. Populate GTIN everywhere — it is the only identifier that survives outside your own systems, and it is now feeding conversational shopping surfaces too. Microsoft’s January 2026 Copilot guidance names price, availability, colour, size, SKU, GTIN and modification date as the fields to keep synced.
And diarise 18 August 2026, when the Content API for Shopping shuts down. Merchant API has been generally available since August 2025.
