YouTube Brings Product Comparison Tables to Ask YouTube

YouTube is testing product review comparison tables in Ask YouTube, with follow-up questions on the watch page. Here’s what e-commerce teams should audit.

YouTube Adds Product Comparison Tables to Ask YouTube

What YouTube announced

YouTube is giving Ask YouTube a clearer path from product question to purchase research. At the Made on YouTube event on September 23, the company confirmed that its experimental conversational search tool will begin weaving shopping features into product review searches.

When a viewer searches for reviews of a specific product, Ask YouTube may now present videos in an organized comparison table. The table can include product attributes and categories tied to the viewer’s preferences. From there, the viewer can open a review and keep asking product-specific questions directly on the video’s watch page.

Johanna Voolich, YouTube’s vice president of product management for viewer products, described the result as “a comparison table that includes product attributes and categories based on your preferences.”

Where each feature lives

The comparison tables belong to the search version of Ask YouTube, accessible through the YouTube search bar. Product follow-up questions then happen in the watch-page version, a separate surface that appears below videos.

Voolich’s post also notes that viewers can ask by voice while watching on TV, a capability already covered in YouTube’s watch-page help guide for smart TVs and game consoles.

The search version is still an experiment. According to YouTube’s help page, it is available to a limited number of users in the United States searching in English on computer, mobile, or TV, with availability gradually expanding. The watch-page version is broader: it lists dozens of countries and languages and can appear on select videos for signed-in users aged 13 and up.

That scale matters. Sundar Pichai said on Alphabet’s Q2 call that more than 140 million users engaged with Ask YouTube on the watch page in June.

Why this matters for e-commerce teams

This is not just a search interface change. A comparison table puts creator reviews and product attributes side by side at the moment a shopper is researching. That can shape which review gets clicked, which product attributes get noticed, and which questions get asked next.

YouTube says the ranking system for Ask YouTube responses prioritizes relevance, engagement, and quality, similar to regular YouTube search. But the announcement does not explain how videos are selected for product searches or where the product attribute data comes from. Brands should treat that gap as an audit opportunity, not a reason to wait.

If you can access the shopping experience, start with a short audit:

  • Run your primary product queries and record which creator reviews appear.
  • Check whether the comparison-table attributes align with how you position the product.
  • Monitor watch-page follow-up answers for gaps, missing features, or competitor framing.
  • Track availability by account, device, language, and region, since rollout specifics are still thin.

What to watch next

YouTube has not published rollout timing, geography, or eligibility details for the new shopping capabilities. As of September 23, the search help page does not mention shopping, but it does state that Ask YouTube conversations are not used to show ads “in this experimental phase.” The watch-page help page notes that eligible tagged products may appear in responses.

Google has also said the watch-page version will receive agentic video understanding “in the coming months.” For brands, that makes the next step clear: find out what Ask YouTube currently surfaces for your category before the feature expands and the comparisons become more intelligent.
