Instagram’s Top Brands of 2026 Win With Cultural Fluency

Sprout Social’s 2026 Instagram roundup shows cultural fluency beats hard selling. Here are the plays growth teams can steal from Nike, NASA and more.

Instagram's top brands win with cultural fluency

Sprout Social’s latest Social Futures Report zooms in on Instagram, and the pattern across 2026’s strongest brand accounts is hard to miss. The brands winning on the platform are not treating it as a product catalog. They are using cultural moments, humor and visual storytelling to earn attention.

From FIFA World Cup activations to a state DOT making road safety entertaining, the report highlights campaigns where creative risk paid off in engagement and earned media value. Here’s what our readers can take from it.

World Cup moments that went beyond sponsorship

Nike and Adidas leaned into their star athletes. Nike tapped Cristiano Ronaldo’s huge Instagram reach, while Adidas used Lionel Messi’s profile around the tournament. One Adidas post featuring Messi’s signature boots reportedly drove more than 15 million interactions. Sprout Social data also estimates Adidas Football generated almost $100 million in earned media value on Instagram from May through July.

Levi’s wasn’t a stadium sponsor, so its logo had to be covered at a Bay Area venue. Instead of staying quiet, the brand posted a Reel welcoming people to the “beautiful [redacted] stadium” with trending audio. The result: 2.5 million engagements, making it Levi’s biggest Instagram post of the year, plus a limited-edition redacted shirt.

Brands that created their own moments

British Airways and Norwegian turned a quarter-final matchup into a friendly airline logo bet. Norwegian changed its logo for a day after losing, and that post brought in more than a million likes and over $1.1 million in earned media value.

Grillo’s Pickles built an absurdist world around a pickle as the main character. A post showing a pickle at the Statue of Liberty generated more than 8 million engagements. So far in 2026, the brand has passed 14 million engagements and $40 million in earned media value.

NASA combined Artemis II mission content with humanizing moments. April launch and return posts drove more than a third of the agency’s 130 million Instagram engagements this year. The Washington State Department of Transportation used humor and public service, including a post about an animal crossing milestone that earned nearly half a million engagements.

McDonald’s tapped into Backrooms internet lore with liminal-space content and generated more than half a million engagements across platforms. That example shows the value of understanding culture before a trend peaks.

What to do with this

The common thread is cultural fluency. Most top posts did not talk about products. They invited audiences into a joke, a story or a moment. The brands that won combined their own identity with a larger cultural event, and they were fast enough to matter.

  • Use creator or athlete partnerships fully: co-post with their accounts instead of borrowing stardom in a vacuum.
  • Treat restrictions as creative prompts: a redacted logo can become merch.
  • Watch for opportunistic partnerships with other brands during live cultural moments.
  • Build an ownable content world or mascot instead of only chasing trends.
  • Pair humor or whimsy with a real emotional narrative to turn a PSA into engagement.

If your team is planning Instagram content for the next quarter, this framework is a useful gut-check: moment + brand truth + distinctive execution. If you cannot state all three, the post likely adds noise rather than value.
