ChatGPT Ads Auto-Edits Copy by Default from Today

OpenAI is switching on automatic creative enhancements by default for ChatGPT Ads. Here's what changes without approval, and how to protect UTMs.

ChatGPT Ads Now Auto-Edits Copy by Default

Marketers, check your ChatGPT Ads settings. OpenAI has turned on automatic creative changes for all new and existing campaigns starting Friday, Oct. 30. If you do nothing, the ad that actually reaches a user may not be the ad you approved.

OpenAI calls the feature “creative enhancements.” The system can rewrite headlines and descriptions, write new copy, translate text, resize images, and even point your ad’s destination URL to a different page on your site that it considers more relevant to the conversation.

That is a meaningful shift. Until now, ad text customization was available as an opt-in setup choice introduced on September 16. Now the broader set of changes is default-on. The system builds variations using the conversation context, the user’s interests, the existing ad, and the landing page. It may generate versions ahead of time or create them live during a conversation.

What changes without your approval

The uncomfortable part: none of these generated variations needs individual review or approval. Ads Manager does not show a preview for every version, so the ad a user sees can differ from your original title, description, destination link, or call-to-action.

OpenAI’s help page is blunt about attribution:

“Changes over time do not, on their own, establish the effect of creative enhancements.”

Controls and tracking gaps to check today

You can still opt out at any time in Ads Manager under Manage settings. Account-level settings act as the default, and campaign-level settings override them. Existing account- or campaign-level opt-outs stay intact.

But before you decide, check your tracking setup:

  • Add UTM parameters directly to each ad’s destination URL; static parameters persist on ad clicks.
  • Ads Manager lets you append query parameters at campaign, ad group, and ad levels, with ad URL parameters taking precedence.
  • The help page does not yet explain how tracking parameters are passed when creative enhancements changes the destination URL.

OpenAI also does not yet offer a report that shows each enhanced version individually. That makes it hard to measure whether the automatic tweaks are helping or hurting.

Multi-image ads enter open beta

On Oct. 26, OpenAI introduced a multi-image ad format in Ads Manager as an open beta. Advertisers can choose “Multiple images” under Ad format for standard campaigns with Reach, Clicks, or Conversions objectives. Each ad uses four to six square 1:1 images, all linking to the same destination URL. For now, “Learn more” is the only call-to-action available for multi-image ads.

Why this matters for performance marketers

The default-on move makes ChatGPT Ads more dynamic, but it shifts responsibility to the advertiser. Landing pages must be current on price, promotions, product availability, and offers, because the system may redirect users to any relevant page on your site. If your landing pages are stale, the automatic system could amplify bad information.

On iOS, ChatGPT’s in-app browser shows only the hostname. OpenAI’s ad guide suggests using the Share-Sheet copy option to see the full URL of an ad—a useful detail when auditing where traffic actually lands.

Ads Manager is still a beta, and OpenAI plans to add more metrics, reporting views, and insights. You can turn creative enhancements off now and re-enable them later when you can measure them properly.
