DoubleVerify has added ChatGPT Ads to its Rockerbox attribution tool, so performance marketers can finally see the AI chat channel in the same report as search, social and the rest of their media. The first disclosed customer figure: Weight Watchers’ attributed cost per acquisition came in 15.3% below its established benchmark.
The number is interesting, but it arrives with no spend, no flight dates, no conversion counts and no definition of the benchmark. That makes it an early signal, not a proof point.
What was actually announced
On October 5, 2026, DoubleVerify said advertisers can now measure ChatGPT Ads as a touchpoint inside DV Rockerbox, the attribution business it bought in 2025 for $85 million. The company also disclosed a separate brand suitability pilot with OpenAI, still in development, that would assess conversation-level risk without reading private user chats.
DoubleVerify’s CEO Mark Zagorski framed the move around business impact, saying advertisers want to know “not just whether a new channel is performing, but the business impact it’s actually driving.” The release does not disclose pricing, markets or technical documentation.
Why a relative CPA isn’t enough
Attribution is a set of credit rules. A touchpoint may appear in a conversion path, but only an incrementality test can show whether the conversion would have happened anyway.
- One advertiser’s 15.3% gap could represent ten conversions or ten thousand.
- Choose a different window or benchmark, and the CPA and ROAS move.
- OpenAI’s same-day post calls the comparison a blended paid-search benchmark; DoubleVerify says “established benchmark.”
For media buyers, the operational lesson is simple: when a vendor shares a relative performance figure, ask for the numerator, the denominator, the window and the benchmark before it becomes a budget input.
The context that makes this matter
ChatGPT ads scaled from a $60 CPM US pilot on February 9, 2026 to a $1 billion annualized run rate by August 31. Yet the pixel and Conversions API only arrived with self-serve Ads Manager on May 5, and view-through reporting came later with a fixed one-day window.
Independent verification has been the missing layer all along. This announcement adds two pieces of that layer: third-party attribution and a suitability pilot. But both are partial: one has a single vendor-supplied customer figure, the other has no timetable.
What to do about it
Treat ChatGPT Ads like any emerging channel. Run small, measured tests, document your benchmark and credit rules, and demand the same method from any vendor that sells you measurement. If a partner will not share the denominator, treat the result as directional.
The independence question also matters. DoubleVerify is being acquired by Nielsen in a deal expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, while acting as both an attribution vendor to advertisers and a prospective evaluator of OpenAI’s suitability policies. Buyers should watch how those roles are separated.
