Google AI Mode Passes 1B Users as Generative UI Goes Global

Google's generative interface is now global in AI Mode, which passed 1 billion monthly users. Here's why brands face a Booking.com-style choice.

Google AI Mode Passes 1B Users as Generative UI Goes Global

Google’s chat-style search tab crossed a new milestone. By Aug. 19, 2026, generative UI was live globally in English inside AI Mode. The feature first appeared with Gemini 3 in November 2025 and was promised to all users at I/O in May 2026. AI Mode has now passed 1 billion monthly users.

OpenAI shipped its own version. On Oct. 7, 2026, ChatGPT launched Intelligent UI alongside GPT-6, tucking graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and calculators directly into conversations. Most paid ChatGPT plans received it that day; Free and Go plans followed on Oct. 8.

An interface, not an answer

Generative UI is a screen built for each response. Ask for a road trip and the AI may return a map, ask for a bill split and it returns a calculator. Google says it combines Google Antigravity with the agentic coding abilities of Gemini 3.5 Flash to write these tools in real time. OpenAI says ChatGPT composes its screens from ready-made parts while the answer is still being written.

The reach is real but the usage data is partial. Google’s figures, last updated Aug. 31, put AI Overviews above 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode above 1 billion. ChatGPT sits above 1.2 billion weekly users. Neither company has said how many people actually see a generated interface.

Your data is not inside the screen

Look at the demos. Google’s examples are mostly study aids, custom tools and simulations. OpenAI’s are a Sunday roast, a road trip, a bill splitter and a retirement calculator. None shows a hotel’s rooms, a store’s products or a local business’s hours inside the generated interface.

Google says responses carry prominent links to high-quality content, but those links sit next to the generated screen. That is a crucial difference: a brand can be cited without being present as a transaction surface.

The Booking.com fork

For D2C brands, hotels and retailers, this is the same decision hotels faced with Booking.com. You can wait for Google to send the booking or order, accepting an intermediary that holds the screen and the customer relationship, or you can build owned demand through email, app, SMS and community. Most businesses will end up doing both, but the sequencing matters.

Google has not announced a commission. But at Marketing Live 2025, the company said it was expanding ads in AI Overviews and testing ads in AI Mode. Paid placement inside AI answers is already a product. A commission on bookings completed inside a generated interface is not announced but is an obvious next step.

Act before the payment button exists

You do not need to wait for Google to turn generated screens into a checkout.

  • Track AI Mode and AI Overview click behavior as its own source in analytics.
  • Test email, SMS and app offers that convert without search rent.
  • Model unit economics for a possible commission or AI cost-per-click later.

That matters more because Google is already training Gemini 4. On Alphabet’s July 22 earnings call, Sundar Pichai said agentic coding is one area where teams are very focused. If Gemini 4 gets better at writing code, the generated interfaces that carry transactions will get better too.
