Instagram Algorithm 2026: Reels Get 36% More Reach Than Carousels

Instagram's 2026 ranking signals: watch time, likes and sends. Reels earn 36% more reach than carousels—here's how to use each surface.

Instagram 2026: Reels Earn 36% More Reach Than Carousels

Instagram has stopped making marketers guess. The platform now shares the broad rules behind feed, stories, explore and reels—and the practical takeaway is a sharper split between reach and engagement.

Reels reach, carousels convert

Buffer’s analysis of more than 4 million Instagram posts puts a number on that split: Reels earn 36% more reach than carousels, while carousels earn 12% more engagement than Reels.

Treat the numbers as a portfolio decision, not a format war. Reels surface you to non-followers. Carousels give the people who already know you a reason to swipe, save and stay.

The signals that matter most

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri says thousands of signals shape ranking, but three carry the most weight:

  • Watch time: how long people spend with a post.
  • Likes per reach: slightly more important when showing content to followers.
  • Sends per reach: slightly more important when showing content to non-followers.

The operational shift is simple. If your goal is retention, design for likes. If your goal is discovery, design for sends.

Four principles Instagram rewards

Mosseri says Instagram ranks content on originality, recency, breaking content and model size. Originality is the most actionable for creators. The platform gives more distribution to the original creator than to reposters, and accounts that mostly repost others’ work are not recommended to non-followers.

Instagram is also pushing more impressions to posts under 24 hours old. And through “auditioning,” the platform shows public posts to a small non-follower audience first, then expands distribution when the post performs.

Mosseri puts the originality principle bluntly: Instagram wants to give “more distribution to the original content creator than to those who repost it.”

Play each surface by its job

Feed and stories are where you keep followers. Stories rank by viewing history, engagement history and relationship closeness—so use them for community, not cold reach. Carousels get a second chance: if someone doesn’t swipe every slide, Instagram can serve the unseen slide later as new content.

Explore and Reels are where you meet new people. Reels are almost entirely recommendations, so watch time and sends do the heavy lifting. On Explore, early popularity and fast engagement tell Instagram to keep pushing a post.

One low-effort win: add audio to photo posts and carousels. It helps them appear in the Reels feed and grab users who browse with sound on.

Put together, your Instagram plan becomes: Reels for reach, carousels for engagement, stories for connection. The winners will stop cross-posting the same asset everywhere and start assigning each surface a job.
