What 350,000 Locations Reveal About AI Search

SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index analyzed 350,000 locations and found the traits AI search engines reward. Here's what changed for local SEO.

350,000 Locations Show What AI Search Recommends

Local search used to mean showing up in Google’s local pack. That game just got bigger: the same signals now determine whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode name your business when someone asks for a plumber, a dentist, or a coffee shop nearby.

SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, which analyzed about 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands, found a clear pattern. The businesses AI platforms recommend share a few traits: accurate information, strong reviews, differentiated local content, and a consistent presence across platforms.

What 350,000 locations reveal

The study calls out four common traits among AI-recommended businesses. First, their information is complete and consistent across Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook, and their own websites. Second, they have high ratings, steady review volume, and active responses. Third, they describe specific services, amenities, and specialties rather than relying on generic copy. Fourth, they are visible across multiple platforms, not just strong in one channel.

Google still ranks local results on relevance, distance, and prominence. AI search platforms layer on a credibility test: can they verify that your name, address, and phone number describe the right business? That is why local SEO has moved from a Google-only task to an every-surface task.

Why entity clarity is the new local moat

Consistent NAP data—name, address, and phone number—works as an entity-clarity signal. When the same details appear across directories, social profiles, and your site, search and AI systems can confidently identify, describe, and recommend you. When they drift, algorithms hesitate, and hesitation means fewer recommendations.

Reviews pull double duty. They are a ranking signal and a trust signal, for searchers deciding where to go and for AI systems deciding who to name. Responding to reviews shows both audiences that the business is real and engaged. SEO consultant Charles Floate also recommends earning structured citations in formal directories and unstructured citations on blogs and news sites.

What to do this week

  • Complete and verify your Google Business Profile, including hours, photos, attributes, and services.
  • Audit your NAP across every listing; fix inconsistencies before chasing new citations.
  • Ask satisfied customers for Google reviews and respond to every review.
  • Track rankings at the ZIP code or city level, not just nationally.

Local keyword research also rewards intent. Terms like “emergency plumber” or “same-day” signal someone ready to act, even when search volume is low. Prioritize service-specific and near-me phrases over broad national volume.

Monitoring matters at a granular level. National rankings hide neighborhood wins and losses. Track Google Maps positions for your target keywords, and watch which queries trigger the local pack so you can double down on the service-specific terms that bring people closest to hiring.

Keep the engine running

Local SEO is not a one-time setup. Listings drift, competitors update profiles, and AI systems keep re-evaluating who to recommend. The same work—accurate details, credible reviews, and clear local content—now feeds the local pack, Google Maps, and AI answers all at once.

The businesses that treat consistency as a growth channel will be the ones AI names next.
