YouTube rolls out prompt-built feeds: 3 free, 8 for Premium

YouTube's new prompt-built custom feeds give free accounts three slots and Premium members eight. Here's what changes for discovery, creators and advertisers.

YouTube prompt feeds: 3 free, 8 Premium

YouTube is turning its Home feed into something closer to a search-driven playlist. On October 22, 2026, the platform started rolling out custom feeds to signed-in viewers in the United States, in English. Viewers type a prompt – YouTube’s own example is ‘help me unwind after work with guided meditations under 10 minutes’ – and YouTube saves it as a dedicated feed at the top of Home.

The limit is where Premium shows up. Free accounts can keep up to three active custom feeds. YouTube Premium members can keep up to eight. That is the first time a paid tier has controlled how many prompt-driven feeds an account can hold.

The same rollout redesigns the mobile top bar. Subs – the renamed Subscriptions feed – now sits next to Home, Live, Music and, for viewers with Primetime Channel or YouTube TV add-ons, Movies & TV. Without those subscriptions, Movies & TV lives in the More menu.

How a prompt becomes a feed

On mobile, the entry point is a plus sign at the top of Home; on desktop, viewers use a Custom feed option at the top left. A viewer can describe a topic, channel or ‘vibe’. Feeds sync across mobile and desktop when signed into the same Google account, stay private to the account, and can be rewritten at any time.

The mechanics matter for retention:

  • Custom feed prompts expire after 30 days of inactivity.
  • Refresh generates new recommendations, but some videos may stay the same.
  • Tablets are excluded for now, and watch history must be on or the feeds and top bar disappear.
  • Watches from a custom feed are added to standard watch history and can influence the main Home feed.

What creators need to know

YouTube’s Help page says custom feeds ‘behave like the Home feed’ for monetization: a watch from a custom feed contributes to creator watch time and revenue as usual. But YouTube is still monitoring impact and has not said whether custom feeds appear as a separate traffic source in Analytics or are folded into Browse features. That leaves channels unable to see whether a prompt-driven feed is sending them viewers.

The shift also changes the discovery mechanic. For years, Home recommendations were largely inferred from behaviour. A prompt like ‘guided meditations under 10 minutes’ lets viewers state format, mood and length outright. After Home rows already dropped from roughly six long-form recommendations to about two in late 2025, the typed feed gives viewers another way to skip what the old recommender would have chosen.

What advertisers should watch

The announcement is silent on ads. YouTube does not yet say whether ads appear inside custom feeds like standard Home placements, whether advertisers can target or exclude them, or whether prompt text informs ad selection. The Premium split adds a practical wrinkle: Premium members watch without ads and now get more than twice as many custom feed slots. For media buyers, discovery is shifting from inferred behaviour to stated intent.

Meta made a comparable move in October, adding typed requests to Facebook’s Feed and Reels. Neither YouTube nor Meta has published how long those prompts persist in ad systems.

Make it work for you

For now, treat every prompt as a new packaging brief. If a viewer might type ‘under 10 minutes’ or ‘morning yoga’, make sure your title, thumbnail and description carry those exact signals. Then watch Browse traffic patterns as the rollout expands beyond the US.
