ChatGPT Ads Hit $1B Run Rate in Under 200 Days

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads passed a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days. Here’s what the scale, pricing and buyer access mean for performance teams.

ChatGPT Ads Hit $1B Run Rate in Under 200 Days

OpenAI has crossed a milestone that would have been unthinkable for the chatbot category a year ago. On August 31, the company told CNBC that advertising inside ChatGPT had reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate, less than 200 days after the US pilot launched. David Dugan, the former Meta agency executive who leads OpenAI’s global ads solutions team, framed the moment in a LinkedIn post as “less than 200 days since launch.”

Why a run-rate milestone matters

Run rate is a projection, not booked revenue, and Digiday’s reporting puts the underlying number at roughly $83 million in monthly revenue. But the scale is real. The pilot crossed $100 million annualised in late March and grew tenfold by August 31, while CPMs fell from $60 at launch to as low as $25. Price did not drive the number; volume did.

By late September, OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability page listed 63 self-serve countries, up from one country in early April. That is channel-shift speed, not a gradual test.

What changed under the hood

Launch terms were aggressive and then loosened: a $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum gave way to $25 CPMs and cost-per-click bidding. Sensor Tower estimates ads shown per user per hour rose 163% between April and August, while Similarweb recorded sponsored placements in 26% of ChatGPT responses shown to Free and Go users at a 0.50% click-through rate. Those are panel estimates, not audited figures.

  • More surfaces: Sponsored Agents began testing on September 16, and ChatGPT Ads now connects to HubSpot and Shopify.
  • More buying routes: Amazon Ads opened an Amazon DSP pilot, and Adform became a European technology partner.
  • More scrutiny: The EU designated ChatGPT a very large online search engine on the same day, with ad transparency duties due by the end of 2026.

What your team should do

Early channel adoption has a playbook: test while CPMs are low, in newly opened markets, before competition pushes prices up. But do not treat the $1 billion figure as audited. OpenAI has not named independent verification for its own inventory; AppsFlyer and Adjust are app measurement partners, not proof of ChatGPT ad performance.

The bigger strategic point is that OpenAI is now selling ads as a fourth revenue line beside subscriptions, enterprise and APIs while preparing an IPO. That means ad load and buyer pressure will likely keep rising. Marketers who understand this inventory now will be in a stronger position when it becomes a formal part of media plans.
