If you’re waiting until Black Friday to scale holiday paid search, you’re already behind. JumpFly’s 2026 holiday guidance, built around a joint webinar with Google, shows that the season now starts with cautious researchers who compare value signals long before Thanksgiving.
New shopping data backs that up. Tinuiti’s holiday research found that 50% of shoppers expect to spend about the same on gifts as last year, 27% expect to spend more, and 23% expect to spend less. At the same time, Attentive reports that 87% of consumers say the economy will change how they shop Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
The takeaway for search advertisers is not simply “discount harder.” According to Bazaarvoice data cited by JumpFly, free shipping (57%), discounts (51%), and easy returns (42%) are among the top factors when shoppers choose a retailer. Your ads need to make value, shipping confidence, and the right offer obvious from the first impression.
The 2026 framework: four shopper mindsets
Instead of treating the holiday season as one long sale, map campaigns to four distinct buyer modes.
- Deliberate — October through November 25: shoppers research, compare, read reviews, and build lists.
- Cyber 12 — November 26 through December 7: the traditional Cyber 5 has expanded into a longer deal window.
- Determined — December 8 through December 24: urgency rises, and shipping or pickup confidence matters more than broad discounts.
- Devoted — December 25 through early January: gift-card users, self-gifters, and return shoppers are still buying.
Thanksgiving falls on November 26 in 2026, which gives one additional shopping day before December 24 compared with 2025. That helps, but it doesn’t replace early planning. Build promotional, shipping, and creative calendars around the mindsets above, not just the dates on a retail calendar.
Budget before the peak, not after
Most shoppers decide before Black Friday. Attentive’s data shows that 83% of consumers begin planning purchases before Black Friday, 71% plan to start shopping before the event, and 84% expect deals to arrive early. Amazon’s October deal event and competitor responses have also normalized early buying.
That means October and early November need funded coverage. If budgets are fixed, stage them by week rather than spreading them evenly. Fund early research, then increase budgets as high-intent demand builds later in November. If budgets are flexible, agree on efficiency targets now so you can scale responsibly when performance supports it.
Stay ready for late December and January, too. Super Saturday on December 19 requires honest delivery messaging; if products can’t arrive by Christmas, shift to expedited shipping, local pickup, digital gift cards, or printable certificates. After Christmas, self-gifting remains meaningful — Tinuiti found that 31% of holiday shoppers plan to buy gifts for themselves, including 42% of Gen Z and millennials.
Make ads, pages, and payments match
Holiday creative should reduce friction, not just look festive. Update your site with gift guides, shipping cutoffs, return-policy changes, bundles, and Buy Now, Pay Later messaging before shoppers reach checkout. PYMNTS reported that 43% of consumers abandon a purchase when BNPL is unavailable, and 42% choose a lower-cost option when it is missing. If free shipping is offered above a threshold, set the holiday threshold slightly above your average order value to nudge larger carts without making the offer feel unreachable.
For Google Ads, build and schedule promotion assets, sitelinks, Performance Max asset groups, and responsive search ads ahead of time. Google may generate or resize creative when assets are missing, but purpose-built variations give you more control. Accurate holiday content on landing pages can also help Performance Max and AI-generated assets stay relevant, though asset reporting should still be reviewed. Keep product visibility and important text inside safe areas, and supply horizontal, square, and vertical formats.
Avoid launching a different Black Friday or Cyber Monday offer every day. Automated systems need time to serve, learn, and collect useful data. Pick one strong core promotion across a longer window, and let the website communicate the full offer details.
