Google AI Mode ads expand to 10 more countries — no opt-out

Google expands AI Mode ads to 10 more countries with no separate opt-out, plus multiturn ads in the US. Here's what changes for your campaigns.

Google AI Mode ads hit 10 new countries with no opt-out

Google is about to put your ads inside AI-generated answers — whether you turned that on or not. On October 28, the company said ads in AI Mode are scaling to 10 more countries, and the product makes no allowance for advertisers who want out.

The new markets: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. With the United States already live, that makes 11 countries. Google also plans Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom by the end of Q4 2026, and it is launching multiturn ads in the US so placements can show on follow-up questions. Shashi Thakur, vice president and general manager of Google Search Ads and Ads on Google Experiences, framed the change around increasingly conversational search.

The catch: no opt-out, no separate line

Google’s help page is blunt. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns in those countries are automatically eligible through the regular ad auction. No new campaigns, no extra budget — and no switch to exclude AI Mode on its own.

What marketers do keep is campaign-level control:

  • Negative keywords, asset pinning and brand exclusions continue to apply.
  • Reporting stays aggregated — impressions, clicks, conversions and cost fold into standard Search reports, with no separate AI Mode segment.
  • Queries show up in aggregate in the search terms report, so you can’t isolate which questions triggered a placement.

In short, AI Mode is treated as core Search, not an add-on you can negotiate with.

Exact match gets locked out of the good stuff

Google says queries in AI Mode average three times the length of traditional searches, per its US report. That length matters for match types. Google splits AI Mode ad serving into direct query matching — when a question already carries commercial intent — and contextual matching, where intent emerges from the AI answer on longer, exploratory prompts.

Exact and phrase match keywords can only enter on the first path. Broad match, AI Max for Search, Shopping and Performance Max are eligible for both. Since conversational follow-ups are the format’s growth engine — rising more than 40% per month on average in the US — the match-type gap is not academic.

The proof is thinner than the announcement

Google frames the expansion with two evidence points. People “are comfortable with ads in AI Mode and find them highly relevant,” and click-through rates are “similar between sponsored and organic product list items.” Both claims trace to US data. The CTR figure comes from a 15-day internal window in August and September 2026, with no rates, impressions or query counts published.

A Productrise study over July found AI Mode displayed products on roughly 23% of tracked shopping queries, versus about 88% in standard search — with far fewer listings where products did appear. Sponsored placements in AI Mode are competing against a short list, not a full shopping grid.

The rollout also leaves questions open: Google lists English as the only language, Pakistan gets text ads only, Indonesia stays on AI Overviews only, and the post is silent on whether the earlier sensitive-category exclusions — adult, alcohol, gambling, finance, healthcare and politics — apply in the new markets.

What to do this week

If you advertise in any of the 10 countries, you are already in. Treat it as a control exercise, not a choice to make later. Revisit negative keywords and brand exclusions before spend migrates. Audit which campaign types carry your budget: broad match, PMax and Shopping are now your admission ticket to conversational inventory that exact match cannot reach. And accept that the search terms report will show you the blended result, not the full path.

Brazil and Mexico, planned before year-end, will test whether Google moves AI Mode ads beyond English. That is the next signal for anyone managing work in Latin America.
