B2B Answer Engine Optimization: How to Get Shortlisted in AI

92% of B2B AI users say AI shapes their vendor shortlist. Here's how answer engine optimization gets your brand into those AI answers.

B2B Answer Engine Optimization: How to Show Up in AI

Your next B2B customer might not discover you through a search results page. A buying committee member asks an AI tool which vendors fit, and the answer names a few brands. If you’re not in that answer, you never enter the conversation.

That is the pressure behind B2B answer engine optimization, or AEO: the work of getting your brand cited accurately inside AI-generated responses. The buying cycle is long, but the shortlist forms fast.

Why the AI answer is now a buying committee

Semrush’s survey of more than 600 U.S. B2B professionals found that 92% of AI users say these tools shape their vendor shortlist, and 54% of those are final decision-makers. Meanwhile, B2B purchases average 10.1 months, according to a 2025 6sense report. Buyers spend most of that time validating a shortlist that AI helped create.

Different roles ask different prompts, and the same category can produce different answers. In the source, a security-focused ChatGPT prompt about CRM led with Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics 365. An affordability-focused prompt put Zoho CRM first and treated Salesforce as the expensive enterprise option. Freshsales and Pipedrive only showed up in the affordability answer.

Map questions by committee role

Most B2B buying groups include technical evaluators, security and compliance reviewers, legal reviewers, finance leads, procurement managers, and end users. Each asks about your product through a different lens.

  • Technical evaluator: implementation, integrations and systems fit.
  • Security reviewer: SOC 2 or ISO, data handling and access.
  • Legal reviewer: contract terms and data processing agreements.
  • Finance lead: pricing, total cost and ROI.
  • Procurement manager: vendor stability, SLAs and renewals.
  • End user: daily workflows and ease of use.

Ask your sales team who joined the last 10 closed deals. Then use those real roles to sort AI prompts instead of relying on a raw keyword list.

Write pages AI can quote

Once you have role-based prompts, make your content easy for a large language model to extract. Phrase subheadings as questions, lead every section with a direct answer, give each heading one job, and keep sections self-contained. If the heading asks about certifications, don’t bury data storage details in the same block.

Show up in the sources AI actually uses

B2B AI answers lean heavily on third-party sources: G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, Clutch and GoodFirms; best-provider roundups and versus comparisons; and practitioner communities such as subreddits and industry forums. Keep review profiles complete, brief analysts like Gartner or Forrester on your category, and let team experts answer questions in buyer communities under their own names.

Catch wrong descriptions before they cost a deal

Being named is not enough. If AI says you lack an integration you launched last quarter, a stakeholder may rule you out without calling you. Use a tool like Semrush’s Perception report to surface the least favorable AI feature descriptions and the sources behind them. Separate inaccurate claims from fair but unfavorable ones, and correct what you control. For weaknesses you cannot change quickly, publish evidence that reframes them, like onboarding documentation or a customer success story.

Measure visibility, not just rankings

Track whether your brand appears in AI answers across stakeholder questions and platforms. Manual checks are useful but limited because responses vary by user and session. Semrush’s Visibility Overview report can track mentions, citations and cited pages at scale. Sentiment moves slowly, so measure quarterly rather than weekly.

B2B AEO is an ongoing practice, not a one-time project. Buyers are already using AI to form and validate shortlists across a multi-month cycle.
