Reddit Loses 1M+ Weekly Search Referrals to Google AI Mode

Reddit lost more than 1M weekly search referrals in October as Google AI Overviews expand. Here's what the login-only test means for SEO teams.

Reddit Loses 1M+ Weekly Search Referrals to Google AI Mode

Reddit just handed marketers a first-party look at what AI search is doing to organic clicks. In its latest shareholder letter, the platform says search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week on average in October, after a third quarter where search traffic was already down meaningfully.

CEO Steve Huffman told investors the biggest suspect is Google’s expansion of AI Overviews and AI Mode. He was blunt about the result: AI Mode “does not drive traffic” — not for Reddit, and, as far as he knows, not for anyone else.

The numbers behind the warning

Reddit’s daily active uniques stayed flat at 130.3 million globally between Q2 and Q3, but the mix shifted. In the U.S., logged-out DAUq dropped from 30.1 million to 27.3 million. Logged-in U.S. users ticked up slightly, from 23.1 million to 23.4 million.

If the October slide holds, Reddit says Q4 daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage from that 130 million base. Outside the U.S., daily uniques still grew 24% year over year, and COO Jen Wong said international marketing spend went up partly to offset lost search reach.

Even so, Q3 revenue grew 53% year over year to $895 million, and logged-in plus app users already account for more than 80% of monetization.

AI answers are replacing the click

Huffman’s working hypothesis has two parts. The bigger one is Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, which push traditional results down the page. The second is machine-translated content being ranked lower, mostly hurting traffic outside the U.S.

He stressed that demand for Reddit hasn’t changed. “Reddit” is still among the most-searched words on Google, and Google is crawling the site as aggressively as ever. The problem is not discovery — it is that AI-generated answers can satisfy a query without sending a click.

What the login-only test changes

This quarter, Reddit will fully test a logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the U.S. The test will determine where to put the login prompt — including for visitors who arrive from Google search.

Huffman said some version of Reddit will remain visible before a hard prompt, and shared links should keep working. But he was clear about the direction: “This is a test, but we are going to make this transition.” The trade-off, he said, will likely be reach for engagement.

Reddit says logging in helps users find more relevant content, gives the platform better signals for ad targeting, and protects its data from scraping. Most scraping, Huffman noted, happens through logged-out access.

What growth teams should do now

This is a warning for any brand that relies on search referrals. If a platform with 130 million daily active uniques loses clicks to AI answers, smaller content sites are likely feeling it too.

  • Audit how much of your traffic is logged-out, mobile-web and search-referred.
  • Track zero-click queries: searches where Google answers without a click.
  • Diversify into owned channels, communities and email so growth does not depend on a blue link.

Reddit’s own numbers suggest the platform is willing to trade some public reach for logged-in engagement and data control. Watch how much of a thread remains readable in test markets — that line will tell you how aggressive the global rollout could be.
