Search didn’t just get an AI layer bolted on. It fractured. And two fresh studies covered by Search Engine Journal give us actual numbers to plan around instead of vibes.
Here’s the short version: people are asking longer, more conversational questions, across more platforms, and clicking out less than ever. If your entire SEO strategy still assumes a keyword goes in, a blue link comes out, you’re optimising for a shrinking slice of behaviour.
The zero-click number keeps climbing
SparkToro’s 2026 clickstream data puts 68% of U.S. Google searches ending without a click to the open web. In 2019 that figure was 49%.
Important nuance: this predates generative AI. It’s a decade-long trend that AI Overviews accelerated rather than created. Google has been building a walled garden of instant answers for years, partly to stop users drifting off to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, where discovery is visual, community-led and instant.
That drift is exactly why “Search Everywhere Optimization” got coined by Ashley Liddell back in 2023. Intent doesn’t live in one box anymore.
Queries are getting longer and more human
Google shared AI Mode usage data at I/O 2026 and the shape of it matters more than the headline user count (over 1 billion monthly actives).
- The average AI query is three times longer than a traditional search.
- Users lean on action verbs like “explain” and “summarize”.
- The pronoun “I” shows up constantly, signalling personal, dialogue-style intent.
- Follow-up questions are rising 40% month over month.
- More than one in six AI Mode searches involves voice, image or video.
Translation for content teams: fragmented nouns are out. Complete, timeless human questions are in.
The Spanish media study: question words are triggers
The first major study of AI Overviews in Spanish media, co-authored within the CUVICOM project framework with MJ Cachón and University of Barcelona researchers Mari Vállez and Carlos Lopezosa, quantified something SEOs have only sensed.
Query complexity predicts AI activation. Four-word searches trigger an AI Overview 48.1% of the time. Together with three-word queries, they account for nearly 70% of all AI-generated results.
The “6Ws” of journalism are near-guarantees:
- Why — 92.3% AIO trigger rate
- What — 85.7%
- Who — 68.4%
Intent behind these queries skews heavily evergreen (75.2%).
The blue ocean nobody’s talking about
Here’s the finding worth putting in your next client deck. AI Overviews show on 34.6% of evergreen searches but practically vanish on breaking news (1.1%), and barely co-occur with Top Stories (1.4%).
Even better: 43.6% of analysed SERPs displayed neither an AIO nor Top Stories. That’s a huge space where classic organic ranking still works exactly as it always did. Don’t abandon fundamentals because of a headline about zero clicks.
There’s also a brand visibility paradox. 20 Minutos hit 38.9% AIO presence on brand queries while overall traffic leader El Español sat at 11.1%. Traffic volume does not equal generative share of voice. For publishers, being cited in an AIO acts as E-E-A-T validation rather than lost traffic.
Eye-tracking: attention is not action
A separate eye-tracking study with Diego Criado and MJ Cachón found an “attention-to-action gap”. Images, product listings and the AIO “Explore Further” button pull up to 100% visual engagement and deliver 0% click-through. Pure scan-and-move-on.
The converters? The core AI Overview block at 86.4%, and traditional organic links at a dominant 95.5% CTR.
So peripheral SERP furniture is becoming visual noise. The two places that still capture deliberate, high-intent traffic are the AIO text itself and a genuinely high organic ranking.
Five intents, not three
Informational, navigational, transactional is fracturing. Google now frames AI Mode usage around five action pillars: explore, decide, learn, create, do. Search is shifting from an information directory to an active utility layer.
WAN-IFRA’s Ezra Eeman noted these map closely onto Dmitry Shishkin’s “User Needs” model for media — educate, inspire, give perspective.
What to do on Monday
- Audit your content against question words. If “why” triggers an AIO 92.3% of the time, build definitive why-pages.
- Map keywords to the five verbs, not the three old intents.
- Find your 43.6% — SERPs with no AIO and no Top Stories. Those are ranking wins hiding in plain sight.
- Stop optimising peripheral SERP real estate that gets stared at but never clicked.
- Add depth metrics next to clicks. As Sean Griffey put it, “Attention is transactional. Reciprocity is sustainable. It’s a moat.”
Reach is cheap now. Belonging isn’t.
