Q4 Prospecting Needs 6–8 Weeks: Start Before October Ends

Google and Meta's automated campaigns will spend Q4 at the bottom of the funnel. Rebuild full-funnel controls before October ends.

Q4 Prospecting Needs 6–8 Weeks: Start Before October Ends

Every ecommerce media plan claims full-funnel coverage. The ad account often tells a different story. Google and Meta both offer an automated campaign type that claims to cover awareness through purchase, and both tend to buy the cheapest conversions available: people who already know you.

That is not a bug. Performance Max and Advantage+ are tuned to a conversion target. Someone who has visited your site three times converts far more cheaply than a stranger. The algorithm does what it is told. The risk appears when those campaigns absorb the entire budget and nobody is funding future demand.

Automation slides to the bottom

Because bottom-funnel conversions are cheaper, an efficiency-focused bidder will spend there first. Blended ROAS may look stable while the account quietly stops creating new customers. Then Q4 arrives, advertisers push more budget into the same campaigns, and the extra money chases the same high-intent people at worse prices.

Black Friday is November 27. The important number is not the sale date, but the lead time: upper-funnel spend typically needs six to eight weeks before it shows up as revenue. October is the final month that can meaningfully shape November demand.

Meta removed its easiest full-funnel control

Meta used to let advertisers set an Existing Customer Budget Cap inside Advantage+ Shopping. That lever is now gone. Meta’s Help Center lists the feature as no longer available, and Advantage+ Shopping has been folded into Advantage+ Sales.

The capability still exists, but as manual work. The simplest rebuild is a manual sales campaign that excludes existing customer audiences. On larger accounts, the guide suggests two ad sets: one targeting existing customers and one broad set with those customers excluded, with ad set spending limits holding the split.

Google’s lever exists but ships off

Google has an equivalent in its new customer acquisition goal. It runs in two modes: bid higher for new customers while still serving existing ones, or target new customers only. It is available on Performance Max, Search and Demand Gen.

The setting is only as good as the data behind it. Left on purchase conversion history alone, it may work from partial data. Feeding it a real Customer Match list of actual buyers, and labelling that list in the acquisition panel, makes it far more useful. Note: for Performance Max store-goal campaigns, only the new-customers-only mode is compatible.

Exclusions are the new funnel structure

On both platforms the practical play is less about adding campaigns for each stage and more about taking cheap conversions off the table in specific campaigns so budget has somewhere else to go. The exclusion list should include:

  • Recent purchasers, using a window that fits your repurchase cycle
  • A real, refreshed customer file, not one uploaded once and forgotten
  • Cart abandoners if they already have a dedicated flow
  • Brand terms, kept in their own campaign rather than inside prospecting

Do the October checklist now

If you only do one thing, upload that customer file. Everything else improves once Google and Meta know who your actual buyers are. Then move in this order: turn on Google’s new customer acquisition goal in bid-higher mode on Performance Max, rebuild the Meta cap with exclusions and spending limits, audit stale exclusion lists, and set prospecting budget as a fixed number, not whatever is left over.

Avoid restructuring in the last two weeks before Black Friday. Avoid switching everything to new-customers-only at once. And do not judge upstream campaigns on last-click ROAS alone; that fight can wait until January.
