StackAdapt Retargets ChatGPT Ad Viewers on CTV, Display

StackAdapt now turns ChatGPT ad views into retargeting audiences across CTV and display. Here's what to watch before scaling budgets.

ChatGPT views become CTV retargeting audiences

StackAdapt says brands buying ChatGPT Ads through its platform can now retarget people who viewed those ads across its wider programmatic inventory, including connected TV and display. The announcement, dated October 27, 2026, connects OpenAI’s conversational ad unit to StackAdapt’s Data Hub.

The trigger is a view, not a click. That is the core change. A click already sends a person to an advertiser’s site, where first-party tags can pick them up. A view happens entirely inside ChatGPT, so until now it stayed there.

Why this changes the ChatGPT Ads equation

ChatGPT Ads have scaled fast. By late October OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns since launch, across 89 countries, with ads tracking to a $1 billion annualised run rate. Yet the value of a ChatGPT impression has been hard to prove outside the chat itself.

StackAdapt’s move makes a ChatGPT view a potential top-of-funnel audience seed. A user sees a brand message inside ChatGPT, and the same user can later be reached on a TV or a display placement. For brand budgets and performance teams, that turns conversational inventory into one part of a cross-channel sequence rather than a siloed test.

Three capabilities the release lists

  • Organise first-party data: bring customer and prospect records together with other audience sources inside Data Hub.
  • Centralise audience management: coordinate CRM integrations, first-party data and retargeting segments in one place.
  • Connect cross-channel retargeting: follow people across StackAdapt’s broader programmatic ecosystem after they view a ChatGPT Ad.

The first two are mostly the same Data Hub job. The third is the new ChatGPT-specific mechanic.

The questions marketers should push on

StackAdapt’s release is thin on the details that decide whether this works at scale. It names no pricing, no launch markets, no match rate, no minimum segment size and no clients. It also does not explain how a view inside ChatGPT is matched to a person on a connected TV or a web page.

Europe is the obvious pressure point. OpenAI has said ChatGPT ads in the EEA and Switzerland are not personalised at launch, and advertisers only receive aggregate performance figures. A retargeting segment built from viewers is structurally different from an aggregate view count, and neither company has clarified how those rules apply here.

What to do before you scale this

Treat it as a hypothesis, not a proven channel. Run a modest ChatGPT Ads test, map the exposure to a retargeting segment, and compare lift on CTV or display against a holdout audience. Ask how conversions will be deduplicated: if a person sees a ChatGPT ad, then a retargeted CTV ad, then buys, both environments may claim credit.

Also watch OpenAI’s default creative enhancements, which are set to switch on around October 29 or 30. If the system rewrites headlines or destination URLs, your retargeting sequence may follow a version of the creative you never approved.
